Bird by Crystal Chan is a debut fiction book aimed children (10+) and the young adult market.
Jewel never knew her brother Bird, but all her life she has lived in his shadow. Her parents blame Grandpa for the tragedy of their family’s past; they say that Grandpa attracted a malevolent spirit—a duppy—into their home. Grandpa hasn’t spoken a word since. Now Jewel is twelve, and she lives in a house full of secrets and impenetrable silence.
The story of Bird is set in the small town of Caledonia, Iowa, where Jewel never had the chance to meet her brother. Every year celebrating her birthday is hard as the family grieve for the boy who flew from a cliff the daw Jewel was born. Now 12 years old Jewel meets and befriends a strange boy, one who she thinks might have been like her brother. Sitting in a tree he is like a bird, or is he a spirit? a reincarnation of her lost brother. The story is beautifully written and I found engaging from the first chapter. Sometimes books take a while to get into but I have enjoyed this story so far. Covering subjects like mixed race, and family’s changed by death this book is gentle and engaging in its approach.
You can find out what Crystal has to say about her inspiration behind Bird here with this short video describing how her background influenced the characters and how Bird came to life.
