Dear Bed…

Are you like us? with six out of ten families in Britain that miss their beds while away on holiday. This is according to a survey by leading bedding company Silentnight, which looked into what made a dream holiday for UK consumers.

Peace and home comforts are top of the list, with 52% of British holidaymakers just wanting rest and relaxation above everything else. 41% of respondents listed a good night’s sleep as a key criteria for a dream holiday, with 75% of respondents saying that fluffy pillows and duvets were more important than a balcony or mini bar in the hotel room.

Yes that is me, I’m such a light sleeper that I very rarely get a full nights sleep away from home. Added to the fact that I have a memory foam mattress at home and I’m just not used to a conventional mattress anymore. This all equals a pretty crabby Mum Dragon who is always pleased to be back in her own bed.

This doesn’t mean I don’t like holidays, I love to go away. I have been luck enough to have visited some pretty dreamy destinations. Florida is a favourite and I would love to go back. We might have to start saving as the boy has his sights set on a Caribbean cruise. Sadly only 11% of Brits are confident that they will get to visit all their dream holiday destinations. So I guess I am an exception that I have managed to visit several of my dream destinations. Simple ways to improve your sleep 

A lack of sleep can wreak havoc on your health. In the short term, it can cause tiredness and irritability, while prolonged insomnia can increase your risk of serious medical problems like high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. It can also make you more prone to depression and anxiety. The good news is, there are simple steps you can take to improve your sleep, and here are some of the most effective.

Invest in some bedroom basics

Firstly, it’s a good idea to focus on creating the perfect sleeping space. For example, if you don’t already have them, you might benefit from investing in blackout curtains or blinds. These window dressings prevent light from outside streaming in and disturbing your slumber.

It’s vital that you have a sturdy bed too, and a comfy mattress is a must. There are a host of mattress designs to choose from, including pocket sprung, memory foam and latex versions. Don’t panic if you’re not sure which designs will work best for you, you can always read a mattresses buying guide as the one done by Tesco, to get the lowdown on your options.

Stick to a routine

It also pays off to get into a good routine. For example, try going to bed and getting up at the same times each day, even when you’re not working. It’s important to burn energy during the day by doing regular exercise. However, make sure you stop exercising at least four hours before you go to bed. This will help ensure your body had cooled down before you try to fall asleep.

Watch your diet

Watch what you eat and drink too. You might need to cut down on your intake of stimulants such as caffeine, and steer clear of these products in the evenings. Avoid drinking too much alcohol as well. Although booze can help you to drift off at night, it tends to lead to more disrupted sleep. Another top tip is to avoid big or spicy meals late in the evening.

Take some time to relax before bed

It’s also savvy to set aside a little time before you hit the hay to relax and unwind. Try not to watch TV or use your computer or other screens in the run-up to lights-out, these activities can stimulate the brain, making it harder for you to sleep. Instead, try taking a warm bath, read a book or listen to the radio, all of which are far more conducive to getting some shut-eye.

By following advice like this, you should find it easier to sleep soundly at night. If you still can’t get enough sleep after making these changes, the try talking to your doctor, who can offer you advice and guidance on other methods to help you get a good night’s kip.

Spiderman ReadyBed – Review

Spiderman ReadyBed from Worlds Apart is a fantastic junior inflatable bed for kids aged 3+, RRP £31.99 but currently available from ToysRus for £24.99.

The Spiderman ReadyBed box comes with everything you need, with a clever bag design the whole bed rolls up and includes the foot pump. The boy was excited as he loves camping, and this bed looked perfect for him. Although the boy is at the top of the age range height wise ( up to 150cm) the bed proved very comfy, and perfect for sleep overs or odd nights away in the tent.

We set about inflating the bed which is done by attaching the foot pump to the valve at the pillow end of the bed. I found the valve awkward at first, but once I discovered it has a quick release to allow you to deflate the bed quickly we were ready. The bed inflated slowly, as the pump is quite small but the boy was capable of doing this on his own. You are advised not to inflate the till its hard. Simply inflate till the bed is soft but comfy. The bed doesn’t go down either as we have had ours pumped up for over a week.

The boy was impressed with the Spiderman ReadyBed and was keen to put it through its paces, he says

I like that it has a pillow and I cant fall out of it as it has a zip up the side. I was very comfy and didn’t wake up all night. I could fit my cuddlies in too and we all slept well.

I don’t know why we hadn’t come across ReadyBeds before as this will be perfect for the summer garden sleep outs, and certainly a lot more comfy that the boys bed roll. The cover is very easy to remove with simple Velcro fastenings. The Spiderman ReadyBed is all in one piece, and can be washed in a machine at 30 degrees. When you are finished with the ReadyBed simply pull out the clever double valve, and roll the bed back into the in-built bag. The Spiderman ReadyBed is perfect if you have very little space for spare mattresses, don’t have a spare room or your kids love to have friends to stay.

The Spiderman ReadyBed is just one in a range of Junior and toddler beds, with themes from Disney planes, Monsters University, and Minnie mouse. So there is something for everyone, and with a range of adult sized ready beds, I think I might be persuaded to give them a try myself!
