Dig in from Drumond Park – Review

Dig In is a great new game from Drumond park and one I have been excited to try out since I first saw it at Toy Fair in January. Available now for 2-4 players, aged 8+, RRP £19.99. (No batteries needed)

Dig In captured my attention as it is a simple fun family game that takes no time to learn. The box contains 128 play pieces, Dig In bowl, timer and 12 double-sided cards. After setting up the bowl with playing pieces in the centre of the table, players take a card. The first player has one turn of the timer (15 seconds) to find as many of the playing pieces pictured on the card. The first round the players each get a go on their own. Subsequent rounds it is a free for all and the only additional rule is they may only search one-handed.

dig-in-from-drumond-park

The winner of the round is the first to correctly find all the pieces on their card, and the winner of three cards is the Dig In winner! The cards have two sides coloured and grey. The grey meaning that you can collect that piece in any colour, we actually found this more tricky so experimented playing both ways in a game to mix it up.

Dig in, in its simplicity makes it a great game for Christmas, as everyone can join in quickly. Don’t be fooled into thinking that the lack of rules makes Dig In easier for the parents to win. There was plenty of hand slapping and some devious tactics from the one-handed Dragon Dad. The pieces themselves when on their own are easily identifiable, but when in the Dig In mix telling and ice cream from a rocket is a little more tricky. Dig in is a fast and furious game that we have loved playing as a family and cant wait to share with our visitors over the festive season.

The Book Of Everyone – Review

The Book Of Everyone is a fantastic personalised gift that is suitable for just about anyone and everyone. Available to order online from the book of everyone website. Prices from £7.95 for a digital copy up to £49.95 for the deluxe ribboned edition.

I was offered a hardback book to customize as a gift and decided Dragon Dad would be the perfect recipient. Dragon Dad can be tricky to buy for as he doesn’t really have any hobby’s. The Book Of Everyone has turned out to be the best gift for him. I started with the online book builder and decided to customize the book of Dad. There are plenty of other options including the Book of Everyone Christmas edition which looks fun.

everyone

The website was easy to use, once I had changed my region to the UK. You add in the recipient’s name and date of birth, choosing the ages to be displayed on the pages of the book. You can add in your details so the recipient knows who the book is from and the colours of the cover. Then comes the part that I enjoyed the most, customizing the pages.

The pages of the book of everyone include set pages with fun facts of the day the recipient was born. Other pages can be changed either with different pictures of colours. Some pages you can change the wording, add in your own jokes and quotes and things personal to the recipient. I took a while to complete the book of everyone as I wanted to add in a few personal quotes for Dad Dragon.

book-of-everyone-pages

There are a great mix of pages with retro pictures and a quirky feel. The book of everyone is packed with facts and it was hard not to want to read every page as I was putting the book together. Adding in a few personal family jokes in reference to his love of Jaffa cakes adds a personal touch to the book of everyone. Finally you place the order and sit back to wait for your book of everyone to be delivered.

I was very impressed with delivery too. The book of everyone arrived quickly and beautifully packaged. The quality of the book is great and the book has a lovely hardback cover with a matt and expensive feel to it. I love the lion on the cover and the contrast print. The pages are good quality and the print quality is great. I loved having a look through the finished book of everyone and cant wait to see what Dad Dragon thinks of this unique gift.

Each book of everyone comes with a link for family and friends to have a look at your personalised book online so sharing the fun facts of the recipient. If you would like to win a personalised book of everyone then enter my giveaway below, or visit the website for a truly unique gift.

Darth Vader Silhouette Puzzle – Review

Darth Vader is part of the Silhouette Series from  Ravensburger, with 1,098 pieces and measures 70cm x 106cm, suited for ages 10+.

This is the first Star Wars puzzle that I have completed. I had hoped that the boy and Dad Dragon might help, but I think the sheer size put them off! Darth Vader is a great shaped puzzle and the addition of the shaped pieces add another part to the puzzle enjoyment.

darth-vader

I have enjoyed doing other puzzles in the Silhouette series, although not easy to start they are something a little different from the normal rectangles. I started the Darth Vader puzzle by sorting what I though might be the edges. It was soon clear that you find the edges for the shaped pieces while sorting. The boy enjoyed sitting and building these mini puzzles for me before leaving me to the vast expanses of space in the puzzle.

darth-vader-puzzle

From the picture Darth Vader looks colourful with the movie characters inside the formidable shape. When you start to sort however there the colours are all very similar. a few points stood out like some of the space craft and a few of the facial features. I started to sort most of the edges and some of the bottom section of the puzzle.  It was slow progress with vast sections of blue and grey. Good light is needed for this puzzle. It was tricky in the electric light of an Autumn evening.

darth-vader-puzzle-complete

I have a real love of shaped puzzles as I like the challenge of not having a straight edge. Darth Vader was a good mix of challenge and interest and the finished puzzle is very impressive. You will need some space to complete the Darth Vader puzzle as it doesn’t fit on a normal sized puzzle board. I love the two different shaped mini puzzles and these were the boys favourite as he could complete them on his own.

Darth Vader Silhouette puzzle is available below with my affiliate link, online and in store. You can find more Silhouette puzzles on the Ravensburger website.

BooHoo.com Kids Clothing – Review

BooHoo.com is a well-known online fashion retailer and have recently added Kids clothing to their range. They asked us to have a look, the boy wanted some new clothes so we thought we would give them a try. I ordered a selection of items from the Boys section which has clothing from ages 5-12 (although I was able to find some sized age 13) I chose some skinny jeans, High top trainers and 4 t-shirts in sizes 11-12 and 13.

boohoo

The BooHoo.com website has plenty of offers, discounts, one day sales and free delivery. I was able to use a code for free next day delivery which was perfect for my impatient boy. The boy is starting to get more conscious of what he wears out of school, and has enjoyed trying out some of the BooHoo.com fashions. He particularly likes the cobweb print Tee. This came in handy for the Halloween party at cubs. The boy is not keen on dressing up so felt in the spirit with his spooky top, without feeling left out .

The boy was also impressed with the high top trainers. He said they were very trendy but took a bit of getting used to in the feel. I have been impressed with the selection and the price with Tee’s from £3 to £5. The high top trainers were £8, perfect for a fashion item that he will grow out of before he can wear them out.

boohoo-kids

The BooHoo.com jeans were a good quality the only problem we had was they don’t have an adjustable waist. You could use the online sizing guide (which I didn’t) as a guide to the correct size. I don’t usually shop online so this has been a lesson for me to take note next time. The boy tends to take a smaller sized trouser so there is some growing room in these size 11 jeans. The sizing for the rest of the clothing was good and I like that the website tells you the make up of the fabric so you have an idea of feel before ordering.

boohoo-clothing

Overall the boy is thrilled with his new wardrobe additions. The trainers have seen good use, and the cobweb tee is a firm favourite. BooHoo.com have a fun constantly changing range of clothes perfect for my mini fashionista!

The Inventor’s Cupboard – Review

The Inventor’s Cupboard is number 5 in the curious cupboard series of Colin Thompson illustrative puzzles. available now online or in store for RRP £11.99 suitable for ages 14+ this 1,000 piece puzzle wasn’t disappointing.

inventors-cupboard

I have completed several of the Ravensburger Colin Thompson puzzles including this amazing 5,000 piece puzzle. The Inventors Cupboard was not disappointing as it featured all the little details I have come to enjoy from Colin’s complex illustrations.

inventors-cupboard-puzzle

The Inventors Cupboard was a challenging puzzle but not one that I was going to lose interest in as there is too much to see. I like to start with the edges. After this the puzzle took some working out. I decided to start with the yellow cable which winds its way around the illustration. This gave me a starting point,it made it easier to find the words.

inventors-cupboard-ravensburger

I then found that I could look and place many of the following pieces but this was at a slower pace than I usually do a puzzle. I loved the tiny details in the puzzle which has a great mix of colours, and I find a pleasure to complete. Bingo Granny came to visit and helped, she found the detail interesting. The boy was very good at locating the pieces and placed quite a few as well. I think if you love Colin’s illustrations then this is a great edition to add to your library.

British History Timeline – Review

British History is the latest edition to the Timeline series of games. You can buy British History now online or from your local toy store for RRP £13.99 suited ages 8+ for 2-8 players.

The British History edition of Timeline is a great addition to the series and can be played on its own or mixed into the other timeline games. The lovely handy storage tin contains 110 historical cards, and instructions. British History Timeline is so easy to learn that we now just have a quick game when we don’t have time for a whole board game set up. We decided that Bingo Granny might be good at British History so tested it out on her most recent visit.

british-history-timeline

You don’t need lots of room to set up the game so British Timeline is the perfect family on the move game. Players start with 4 random cards, and one card is turned face up with the date. Players then take turns placing their cards where they think they belong in the timeline. The winner is the one who can place all of their cards.

british-history

We love this game as it causes so many questions. It is a great multi generation game as we found age doesn’t always help. It can be played tactically by placing the cards you have no idea where they go early. Saving the ones you know the dates can make you the winner. Dad Dragon has found the game he can beat us at as he has a good memory for dates. The boy does well too as once played he too remembers the dated cards.

british-history-timeline-game

We love the addition of the Brexit card, a great one to start with! The boy also loves to just sit and build his own timelines like a game of solitaire. He is learning about British history and keeping himself amused at the same time. British History Timeline is a great game as a Christmas stocking filler, and is great as a whole family game.

British Timeline is available now from Amazon (affiliate link below) and all good retailers.

Cortex Challenge Game – Review

Cortex Challenge is a handy sized brain game from Esdevium, for  2-6 players, aged 8+, RRP £12.99. Available now from your local toy store or online from Amazon (my affiliate link is below)

There are three editions in the Cortex family each have slightly different style challenges. All are easy to understand, but mastering them is the challenge. The Cortex Challenge box includes 90 cards, 10 raised touch cards, 6 brain jigsaws, and instructions.

cortex-challenge

Game play is simple each player has 30 seconds to examine the 10 raised touch cards before they are shuffled and placed face down on the table. The remaining Cortex test cards are shuffled and placed on the table. Players starting with the youngest, take it in turns to turn a card, and test their brainpower. There are eight different style of challenges like memory, maze, duplicates and colours. We found one or two slow-paced game was enough to get used to the types of challenges before playing at full speed.

When the card has been turned it is the first player to cover the card with their hand, and without looking shout out the answer. Answer correctly and you keep that challenge card. Answer incorrectly and no card, plus not being able to answer in the following round. You can win up to 4 test cards, and once two challenges have been matched you can choose a brain piece. The Cortex Challenge winner is the first to complete their 4 piece brain puzzle.

This all may sound simple, and it is to start with. We soon found that as you get faster at answering mistakes were often made. It may seem simple to spot the word written in the correct colour, but your brain may take a while to pick out the answer. We loved the addition of the touch challenge. Remember at the beginning you felt the raised cards? When this card appears the last person who won a test card has the chance to win the touch card. The other players choose which card the player will feel, and you have 10 seconds to decide which one it is. I found this easy and difficult in equal measure. You may think you are good at remembering the feels, but with only 10 seconds this is a great test.

cortex-brain-game

We took Cortex on our summer holiday as it was neat and easy to pack. Because it doesn’t take much room to play Cortex Challenge it is perfect to play while waiting for our evening entertainment, or even after lunch. The more you get used to the types of Cortex Challenge’s the easier it is to play. There was still enough cards for us not to become to over-familiar with the game. And even better we could play easily with 3 players with games lasting around 20 minutes.

If you would like the chance to try out Cortex Challenge, or the Geo or kids edition then click on my Amazon affiliate links below, or visit your local stockist. ( I also spotted Cortex for sale in my local WH Smiths)

Sedum Cottage and Puzzle Handy – Review

Sedum Cottage is number 10 in the Ravensburger series of 1,000 piece Country Cottage Collection.. Suitable for ages 10+ with RRP £11.99.  Puzzle Handy is a new foldable storage puzzle solution available for 1,000 piece or smaller puzzles RRP £9.99.

puzzle-handy

I loved the previous puzzles in the Country Cottage Collection, and the Sedum cottage didn’t disappoint. I love the bright traditional style of this illustrative puzzle. Having a dedicated puzzle board is something that I had been considering. Even with a large dining table it can be a problem moving my puzzle to make space to eat. Puzzle Handy is great as it is sturdy enough to move out-of-the-way. It stores in its own box, when folded and is the perfect puzzle surface.

puzzle-handy-board

The Puzzle Handy is made from the same good quality Ravensburger puzzle board. With 4 slide on edge clips which give it rigidity. I found the surface lovely to puzzle on, and the edge guides are very useful when starting. I started the Sedum Cottage puzzle with the edges and the reds and oranges which stand out from the picture. Using the dotted lines to guide me as to the finished size of the puzzle.

sedum-cottage-and-puzzle-handy

The birds were also easy to complete and the last parts were the roof and sky. I loved the whole Sedum Cottage puzzle, especially the flowers. While I have many of them in my cottage garden. I just wish my garden was as weed free as the illustration. The added border with the plant names makes the Country Cottage collection puzzles stand out and a joy to complete.

A Day with Grandma and Grandad – Puzzle Review

A Day with Grandma and Grandad is a beautiful double illustrative puzzle from Ravensburger. These two 500 piece puzzles are available for RRP £11.99, and are suited to ages 10+.

grandma

Sometimes its nice to complete a 500 piece puzzle rather than a bigger 1,000 piece and the Day with Grandma and Grandad is a fun puzzle to complete. I enjoyed the illustrations of these two charming puzzles as they reminded me of fun times with my nan. Baking was one of my treasured memories of times with my Nan, and I’m sure most people will have similar memories.

grandma-puzzle

Each of the two 500 piece puzzles has an illustrative charm. They are lovely to complete, and have a pleasing finish. I like that the characters feature in each puzzle, and provoke simple summer days spent with Grandparents. These puzzles are a good size while still providing a challenge for a keen puzzler. The details on each of Trevor Mitchells illustrations are great, I love all the tools in Granddad’s garage which remind me of the boys Granddad.

grandma-and-grandad

A day with Grandma and Grandad would make a lovely gift, and is available now online or shops. Here is my affiliate link for the latest Amazon price. Visit the Ravensburger website for more classic puzzles.

Crazy Claw – Review

Crazy Claw is just one of the new games from Drumond Park . This action packed game is suitable for 2-4 players aged 5+, RRP £22.99.

I was lucky enough to play the NEW Crazy Claw game at the London Toy fair earlier in the year. I can see it being popular this year with fun-loving families. Based on the arcade claw machines, you capture a ball from the crazy claw machine. Open the ball to reveal a token and match with your collection card. Match three cards to become crowned the winner.

crazyclaw-3d-lr-1

Crazy Claw may sound simple, but with your opponents using the side paddles to make the balls bounce around the Crazy Claw cube. Grabbing a ball becomes more of a challenge. Crazy Claw is set to be a fun family game and will be available in time time for Christmas. I wont be surprised if it makes a few top toy lists as well with its cute retro game play.
