Eco Beads Giveaway from Interplay and My Style Crafts

Eco Beads are one of the many My Style Craft sets available from Interplay and I have a set to give to one lucky reader. I saw lots of fantastic new craft sets while I was at Toy Fair this year, and am looking forward to trying some of them out for myself. The boy enjoys bracelet crafts and I can see that even he would like the idea of using old paper and recycling them into interesting and different beads.

Mothers Day is only a few days away, and we have been making a few gifts for the Mum’s and Granny’s in the family. Baker Ross have some great new spring kits which are perfect to complete with all the things you need in each pack, they are perfect for the boy who has become a bit reluctant to complete craft projects. Having a kit with everything included means there is no delay in getting started.

mothers day crafts

We spent the weekend having fun with the Heart Fuze Bead kits which make the perfect Mothers Day gift. This is one craft that the boy is happy to sit and make his own unique patterns. Each of the kits comes with a sheet of suggested patterns and we enjoyed making these as well as our own. The boy was very pleased that he is old enough to have a go at fusing the beads with the hot iron He was very confident using it as he has been learning to iron his cub uniform.

mothers day

Baker Ross have a great selection of Mothers Day craft kits, and we were sent some which we have been sharing with the boys cub pack, as they are completing their artist Badges. Our Cub leader always buys Baker Ross kits for the kids to do, and they love having something to take home and show the parents. Because you can buy Baker Ross craft kits in larger quantities at a saving these are perfect for after school groups like cubs.

An Evening Walk – Review

An evening walk is a new 500 piece puzzle from Ravensburger RRP £7.99 suitable for ages 12+.

an evening walk

An evening walk is a beautiful illustration with a vintage Parisian feel. As you would expect from Ravensburger this puzzle has a great fit, bright colours and is a pleasure to piece together. I was interested to see how long this puzzle would take me to complete as I tend to stop and start and place a few pieces while cooking. So I set myself a target and borrowed the boys stopwatch and got started.

an evening walk puzzle

An evening walk has some great colours to get you started and I found after the edges were complete the sky was next as well as the fruit and flowers which were easy to spot. Next I completed the paving and the blues and purple of the citron. The Eifel tower was also easy to find the pieces for and finally the building to finish. I loved that this puzzle was much easier to finish than my usual 1,000 piece puzzles and took up hardly any room on the dining table, so the family didn’t have to eat around it!

evening walk

I loved the details in an evening walk, there is a nice balance of detail and open spaces. the sky makes a great atmosphere on this puzzle, and I think young adult puzzlers would also enjoy this puzzle. Have a look on the Ravensburger website for lots more 500 piece puzzles perfect for those with less space, or want to finish at speed like I did. I completed this puzzle in 1 hour and 40 minutes, not bad I thought!

StikBot – Review

StikBot is a great new fun toy from Brainstorm, and have gone down well in the Dragon house, as these endearing little characters can get up to lots of mischief. The boy had fun with these little plastic figures. They have very pose able bodies, and come in a variety of colours. But the fun doesn’t stop there as you can download an app (available free) on iOS and Android to make your very own #StikBot movies.

stickbot

The app was easy to download, and was simple to get started by making a short video of our little StikBot friends. You would need a tripod or have to hold your tablet or phone very still in order to get a nice smooth film. The app allows you to personalise your short films with green screen techniques, adding graphic’s, music and even recording voices. Each StikBot has a rubber sucker on his hands and feet so he can be posed in many different situations. The StikBot also has elasticated joints making him very pose able, they don’t feel flimsy either so he stays where you put him. The boy had lots of fun playing and posing the StikBots, and with lots of giggles as the StikBots have been doing some fun dance moves means he thinks they are great.

stickbots

We found that our StikBots worked best on a very shiny surface, like glass or highly polished wood and the plastic lid of a toy box worked best as a dance stage. StikBots start from £9.99 and with the addition of a tripod in the StikBots studio I can see these little characters becoming a must have toy. The boy is now getting to grips with the animation software, and I think will soon be sharing with his friends. You can join in the fun by sharing your creations with the hashtag #StikBots on the social media channels. Why not have a look at the website to see what the StikBots have been getting up to.

Santa’s Final Preparations – Ravensburger Christmas Puzzle

Christmas is the perfect time to sit down as a family and complete a puzzle, so Santa’s Final Preparations is a great puzzle for celebrating the season. This limited edition Ravensburger puzzle is available now for RRP £12.99 suited to ages 10+

Santa’s Final Preparations is the 19th Limited Edition Christmas Puzzle developed by our British marketing and design team, and illustrated by Devon-based artist Roy Trower.
This heart-warming design is only available for Christmas 2015, so catch it while you can! – Ravensburger team

santa's final preparations

I have never done a Christmas puzzle before so was excited to see if Santa’s Final Preparations would hold my attention. With the cute illustrations and traditional feel, I was captivated from the first piece, despite the box looking quite red in colour there wasn’t as much red in the puzzle itself. Having had a debate on twitter earlier in the week on the right place to start a puzzle, I had to start with the edges.

santas final preparations ravensburger

There is plenty of small detail in Santa’s final preparations, from the toys all neatly tagged to the sweet hidden cats and cheeky elves. I found that blue was the standout colour to start me off, followed by sorting the red. I found faces and writing next then it was down to a piece by piece analysis. I find this system works for me, interestingly from the twitter chat different people have different techniques. I found that the red piece were the final pieces that I placed in this puzzle. I love how Ravensburger take such care to make every piece unique and details you don’t at first notice now pop out of the picture.

santas final preparations puzzle

I have thoroughly enjoyed completing Santa’s final preparations with some help from the boy who loved the little woodland characters peeping in at the door. I think this puzzle has something for everyone, while still maintaining a traditional feel. Ravensburger puzzles make great gifts all year round, and Santa’s Final Preparation will be a great puzzle to while away the winter hours.

Neuschwanstein Castle 3d puzzle from Ravensburger – Review

Neuschwanstein castle is one of the 3D puzzles available from Ravensburger RRP £34.99 for ages 12+.

From the moment I knew I was getting this puzzle to try I was excited, just like I was many years ago when I first discovered that Walt Disney had based his fairy-tale castle on this famous German castle. I hoped that this Ravensburger 3D puzzle would transport me back to my childhood obsession of having everything with Neuschwanstein castle on it. Postcards, posters, and even a very early foam style jigsaw puzzle.

Neuschwanstein

Neuschwanstein castle is so well know now that this puzzle would have to be pretty impressive to live up to the real castle. The puzzle box says that there are 216 pieces to this puzzle, but it is worth noting that this  number is just the jigsaw pieces that make up the square part of the castle. In addition to this there is a base, towers gates, gable ends, turrets and lots of connecting pieces. The box also contains a detailed instruction booklet in full colour to guide you through the assembly process.

Neuschwanstein castle

Starting by sorting and assembling the jigsaw pieces. I did this by number with help from the boy, we soon had walls. this didn’t take long at all, and it was by far more complicated putting all the different parts together. If you want you can assemble the puzzle pieces by picture, but this would be far more difficult as they look very similar. We have assembled other 3D models before and Neuschwanstein followed the same principles of small teeth at the bottom which locate into groves in the base shape. What makes the Neuschwanstein castle puzzle different is that the base is not a true oblong, and has infact a slight turn to it. This was very cleverly done with one edge being slightly shorter and when fitted into the base kinked the shape slightly.

Neuschwanstein acastle construction

By far the trickiest part of the build is the top roof support and roof itself. The boy made a few attempts to complete this part of the construction before handing over to me. I too found this very difficult to assemble as you have to remember the walls are made from puzzle pieces, and prone to fall out if pushed too hard. You also have to be careful not to dislodge the two front towers as these have to be added before the roof, as I found out.

pieces

The remaining small buildings, towers and turrets all slotted together easily, and although these parts are not numbered it was pretty easy to work out which ones belonged together. The only disappointment we had with this puzzle was some of the L-shaped locking clips on the front part of the puzzle had already broken off in the box. Some were also very fragile and broke off in construction. This didn’t seem to affect the final construction as there are roof parts which hold the walls together.

Neuschwanstein model

The finished model is magnificent and certainly does the Neuschwanstein castle justice. The finished castle measures 39 x 23 x 38cm and is the largest 3d puzzle we have completed. The details on the pieces for the building are beautifully coloured and shaded giving the model a realistic feel. It looks true to the original castle with the shape and colours including the pink brick entrance. The boy was a little disappointed that there weren’t more puzzle type pieces, and we think the front gable and even the gate could have been constructed this way.

The Neuschwanstein castle would make a fantastic gift for any puzzle fan and even the ones like me who collect everything Disney! Have a look at my Amazon affiliate link below for more technical specifications.

Gee Whizz – Review

Gee Whizz is a great new magical box of tricks from Drumond Park. Aimed at children aged 5+, RRP £19.99 this set is a mix of magic tricks and illusions to make the mind boggle.

The box contains instructions for 15 tricks and illusions as well as all the props you will need and of course a special magic wand. The only extras you will need are imagination, and in the case of the boy a good hat!

gee whizz

The boy’s interest in magic has been reignited after we saw a really good close up magician at our campsite in France. He was super keen to try out Gee Whizz and see if there was anything different in this box of tricks. I think he was pleasantly surprised as we have found in the past that some magic sets can be a little flimsy, small or sometimes don’t have all the props included. This can be frustrating if you don’t happen to have a coin of handkerchief handy. Gee Whizz doesn’t have this problem as even with the tricks that needed different parts all the bits are in the box. Add in the super clear guide with detailed colour pictures and we were in for a great magic show.

gee whizz contents

The boy started off with the wand trick which I have to say is very different, and rather cute. Making the feather flowers appear from nowhere is easy and great fun, add in some dramatic moves and your audiences will be wowed. Next out of the Gee Whizz box was the rope trick. This was something the French magician had done, and the boy was soon adding flair to the trick which had me baffled for a while. By far the favourite trick was where’s Polly? With the boys newly named wand “Steve” he could make the parrot fly around the room and appear in a different cage. This is a great trick if you have a child who loves to tell a story like the boy does.

instructions

The Gee Whizz box also contains some clever illusions, a spinning top that changes colour and even cards for you to practice your shadow puppetry. The boy had a great time trying to invent new tricks with the cards, and even put on a mini magic show for us which included some card tricks he had taught himself from YouTube. I would say the only disappointing part of this set is the flimsy box, it would have been nice to have a sturdy box to keep the tricks in, or even a nice little magicians bag. We think this Gee Whizz set would be a perfect starter set for any child and even young ones will love adding their flair to put on their own magic shows.

You can buy Gee Whizz now from toy stockists, click my amazon link below or  visit the Drumond Park website for more information. I can see Gee Whizz being a very popular Christmas gift this year.

We have been given a Gee Whizz box to share with you. Simply complete the gleam app, and answer the question in a comments below.

Happy Days Tenby Ravensburger puzzle – review

Happy Days Tenby Ravensburger puzzle is the latest town to be made into a 1,000 piece puzzle form in the happy days series. Happy Days Tenby is available now RRP £11.99 and I would recommend this puzzle for ages 10+

Happy Days Tenby was a puzzle that caught the boy’s eye, when the postman delivered the latest batch. I think it was the bright colours and fun seaside picture, that made the boy want to help me with this puzzle. Happy Days Tenby has been a complete joy, and its been great to complete this puzzle with the boys help. We started sorting the pieces and the all important edges, the boy very quickly had the outside completed, and we moved onto filling in.

happy days tenby

The boy wanted to start on the boats, but soon realised it was easier to start with the brightly coloured houses. I picked out and sorted the colours for him and he was soon completing portions of the puzzle easily on his own. Each Sunday bingo granny comes to visit, and it wasn’t long before we had her joining in with our Happy Days Tenby puzzle. It was lovely to see three generations engaged in a puzzle and all enjoying the satisfaction on completing their part.

happy days tenby puzzle

I have found the Happy Days Tenby puzzle to be engrossing, colourful and a joy to complete. There werent any particularly tedious parts to the puzzle as there was plenty of interest. I think this puzzle would take about 4-5 hours to complete in one sitting. Happy Days Tenby is and illustration by Kevin Walsh, a Yorkshire born artist, and a magical picture that has brought Tenby to life for us. I think we have inspired bingo granny to start puzzling again as I think she had forgotten what an enjoyable pastime jigsaws can be. The boy has enjoyed putting the Happy Days Tenby puzzle together, and even Dad was pleased when he found a few pieces that fitted!

tenby happy days

I have loved Happy Days Tenby as much as everyone else, and think this has been my favourite puzzle of all the ones I have completed this month. I would certainly look at other puzzles in the Happy Days series, which are all done by different artists. Each one has a different feel and I think this helps to show the difference in the city’s and towns of Great Britain.

Happy Days Tenby is available to buy with my affiliate link, or visit the Ravensburger website for more puzzle in the Happy Days series. Mary Over at Over 40 and a Mum to one also reviewed this puzzle pop over to see what she thought.

Ravensburger Minion Puzzles – Review

The Minions are coming!
If you hadn’t noticed Britain has gone Minion crazy and with the film set for release on 26th June you don’t have long to wait for more antics from Stuart, Kevin and Bob. Ravensburger have a fantastic range of movie exclusive puzzles and we have been asked to review three of the new 3D Minion puzzles for you.

minion

We decided to try out the two 3D mini Minions Puzzles first, these cost RRP £9.99 each and have 54 pieces to make up the globe shape puzzle. Recommended for ages 7-99, I was interested to see how the boy would get on with these. Like all Ravensburger 3D puzzles the Minion Puzzles come with numbered sturdy plastic pieces, so there are two ways to complete the puzzle. Either the traditional way by following the picture clues, or by finding the numbers and arrows on the inside. The boy decided to start the Pirate Minion puzzle with the numbers, and soon had the start of the globe shape. It was easy for him to complete, and even the last piece fitted surprisingly easily.

minion puzzle

The second Minion puzzle is called “London” and this one the boy decided to complete via picture, and he admitted afterwards that this was a much more interesting way to complete a puzzle. The 3D Minion puzzle comes with a coloured paper picture of all six mini pictures around the globe shaped puzzle, and this made completion very easy. Each puzzle also has a small yellow plastic cupped stand so you can display your finished puzzle. The finished puzzle is 7cm across, and can be popped neatly back in the cube box for storage.

Next we completed the 72 piece 3D Minion puzzle which cost RRP £10.95 and is suitable for ages 6-10. The finished puzzle is 13cm across and with bigger pieces than the mini Minion puzzles is much easier to complete. Again there are six mini pictures around the globe shaped puzzle, this time of the Minions having fun in tropical dress! We found this puzzle so much easier to complete than the mini puzzles and have to agree younger children would have no problem with this puzzle.

3d minion puzzle

I was very impressed with how these globe puzzles fit together. I thought there might be problems fitting pieces or bits dropping out, and was convinced the final piece would be tricky. But I was wrong, they all clicked together easily with minimal readjustments. The boy loved these puzzles, and they were the perfect distraction while waiting for food in a restaurant, the staff were intrigued too! The boy has loved these puzzles and has been telling all his friends at school about them. We liked the Mini Minon puzzles the best although they are a little pricey, they were perfect for popping in my bag on days out, and I would defiantly get some more as gifts for friends.

Last week I received a Hamper from Serenata Flowers and I couldn’t be more pleased with the contents, chocolate and lots of it!

serenata flowers and hampers

With Mothers day at the end of the week, chocolate is always on my list so I asked to be sent a surprise gift. I was sent the Chocolate Temptations Hamper, and it came in a beautifully decorated and packed box. The contents had been carefully placed so that when you open the box you can clearly see all the contents. The hamper contained a box of truffles, a box of chocolates, meringues, fudge, two tubs of chocolate covered nuts and one of ginger. With a RRP of £39.99 the Chocolate Temptation hamper is currently discounted by five pounds to £34.99, so great value, with free next day delivery. I was impressed at how well the Serenata Flowers hamper had arrived undamaged, and looking very pretty in its blue striped box.

serenata chocolates

I was keen to see if the flavours were as good as the packaging so started with the chocolate ginger which is an absolute favourite of mine and the little pot of ginger in the Serenata hamper didn’t disappoint on flavour. The more fiery the better and this ginger had a great spark to it. The chocolates taste good and I love the little personal touches of ribbons and bows on each of the gifts in the hamper.
Looking through the Serenata website I found plenty of choice making it difficult to find a favourite item, and I love that you can add personal touches to make your Serenata gift truly unique.
