Ticket to Ride Europe – Review

Ticket to Ride Europe is a board game from Esdevium Games, suitable for ages 8+ RRP £32.99 available from Amazon and other toy stockists.

Ticket to Ride Europe is a strategy game, but don’t be put off once the rules are learnt it is like Monopoly addictive! The box contains Board map of Europe, 240 coloured trains, 15 stations, 110 train cards, 6 long routes, 40 short routes, 5 score markers and rules.

I was daunted by the size of the rule book, but once we had a test game it was actually much more straight forward to play Ticket to ride Europe. To set up the game each player picks a colour of train, stations and playing token. Then you deal each player one long route, 3 short route and 4 train cards. To start you have the chance to discard all but one of your dealt route cards. Think carefully as this is your only chance to get rid of these route cards.

ticket to ride

Ticket to Ride game play is then made up of 3 options, to take additional routes, place trains on the board, or collect the cards needed for completion of trains. This was the part we found was tactical. With the boy playing we found it was ok for him to have his route cards face up so he could see them all easily. When I play Ticket to ride Europe with Dad Dragon we use scrabble rests so we can keep our routes hidden. Game play continues with building, collecting and getting in the way of your opponents.

Claiming a train route involves matching cards to the board, and there are different rules for tunnels and ferry’s. Some involve you using your Train cards which act as jokers and come in very handy. If someone else steals a route you wanted then you have the option of adding stations to use their trains. The game ends when a player gets to their last 2 trains, and the winner is the person scoring the most. You score each time you place a train, each route you complete, unused stations and who has the longest train.

ticket to ride europe review

The whole family has loved playing Ticket to Ride Europe, and we have played as 2,3 and 4, players. Once you have 4 or more players you can use double routes and this changes the game play and tactics a little as well as filling the board up quicker. Game play takes us around an hour, or longer with new players. Most of this time is getting to know the board and place names as they are not all familiar. Once you get used to where on the map they are play defiantly speeds up. We are addicted to playing this game, and have been having adult game sessions when the boy has gone to bed. I love having found a game that makes you think and love the level of strategy needed for this game. We have had some close matches and are currently drawing so there will be a rematch coming soon!

Disney Pictopia – Review

Disney Pictopia is a fun family game with many awards to its name and we were excited to find out if this game would be as fun as it looked from the box. Available now RRP £29.99 for ages 7+ and 2-6 players.

disney pictopia

Disney Pictopia is a picture based question game, but unlike other board games where you play as an individual the great part of this game is that you answer a lot of the questions as groups. This makes Disney Pictopia a great all ages family game. The box contains: 6 mickey counters, 6 sets of wager coins, a dice, Mickey answer dial, board, rules and 1,000 picture question cards.

We found the rules and game play very easy to learn, and the game played well in our little family of 3, as well with more people as we tested this game on granny too! Each player starts choosing a coloured mickey playing token, 5 wager coins, and the answer dial. cards are shuffled and placed picture face up and you are ready to go. The person with the next Birthday starts as the question master. they throw the dice and move their token this number down the board. The square they land on will show which question from the card will be asked. If the question master lands on gold silver or bronze, then the other players will answer as a team. the solo pick spot and spotlight squares you will need your mickey answer dial.

disney pictopia board

Before the question is read out you place a wager coin on the board depending on how confident you are that you will get the answer. These are placed face down on the bottom of the board, and then the question is read out. Depending on the square as to how many answers you have to give, and we loved the fun spotlight rounds. These are questions where you have to match the question masters answer using your mickey answer dial. If answered correctly each player moves the same number of spaces as they wagered. These tokens are then put to one side and play continues with the player on the left becoming the next question master.

On first glance I thought Disney Pictopia might be a little tricky for the boy as he has seen lots of Disney films but maybe not as many as I have in my lifetime. I needn’t have worried as I had the tables turned on me when it came to the newer films and Disney characters. The questions cover lots of the Disney TV shows as well as films so there are some I had never seen before. The questions are sometimes challenging, but we found others which looked hard could be worked out with a little thought They are not always the question you think will be with the picture either so this will keep you on your toes!

disney pictopia game

We have loved Disney Pictopia ( I knew we would) and I think for any Disney loving family this is a must have board game. Games are fun, inclusive of all ages, and get you talking about your favourite characters, or even why you chose Merida to guide you through the forest. I would say our only disappointment is that we cant understand how Dad has managed to win at every game we have played? I think maybe he is a secretly watched more Disney films than we have? The quality of Disney Pictopia means that it will last as a family game, and there are additional rounds and content via the free app.

If Disney is not your family thing, then keep your eyes peeled as the Star Wars version is due out later in the year. I was lucky to have a go of the prototype at the London Toy Fair, and it looks like a winner especially as you can play as Yoda, but beware the questions looked super tricky.

Hotel Tycoon – Review

Hotel Tycoon is a great new board game from Esdevium Games for 2 to 4 players aged 8+ and RRP £24.99.

hotel tycoon

There are two  parts to Hotel Tycoon which make it slightly different to the normal game. The first is the buildings. On first unpacking the game you will have to become a paper engineer and assemble all the different hotel complexes before you start play. The boy and I were looking forward to this part, and although some, were tricky, the task was soon complete and a trial game was set up.

hotel tycoon buildings

  • The contents of Hotel Tycoon include: Game board, 30 buildings with 8 gardens, 8 title deeds, 30 entrances, 4 airplane playing pieces, 2 dice, rules, money and initial set up sheet.

At first glance Hotel Tycoon looked like it was going to be difficult to learn, the aim is simple to bankrupt all the other players. The winner is the one left at the end of the game with all the money. We decided like other games we test a trail no winner game was needed to get used to the rules. We chose our coloured planes and set off.

Each player starts with $12,000 of a mixture of notes, and play is with one number dice. Much like most board games six gives an extra go, with each roll entitling you to land and action the square you land on. The first space you need to land on is a buying space, and this will entitle you to buy the land and title-deed. The next space you need is planning permission this will help you to build your hotel complex. Here the second dice comes into play with a green yes, red no, free hotel and double cost sides. The build for free space are exactly that, and also the free entrance space. There are two extra action areas on the board one where you pass and collect $2,000 handy if you are running out of cash. Passing the control tower allows you to buy an entrance.

hotel Tycoon

I know this all sounds very complicated, but we found as we went through our trial game the rules were fairly simple to pick up. The only one question which the rule book didn’t answer was how many doorsteps each hotel complex could have? A quick look at the box and we realised you can have as many as there are free squares. The boy soon picked up the idea of the game, getting as much money off the other players and set about building on the most expensive site on the board, Uptown Towers.

As soon as you have started to build on your site, and you have an entrance you can start collecting rent. This was the boys favourite part, and he was soon commanding hefty fines off me for all his buildings. As play progresses the Hotel Tycoon starts to look very impressive with all the high-rise buildings. We enjoyed our test game and couldn’t wait for Dad to get home to try Hotel Tycoon out on him.

hotel tycoon board

Hotel Tycoon is a great family game, with skill and amount of luck needed to become a winner. The boy already has favourite property’s and loves the high-rise towers. Playing with 3 players was a much shorter and enjoyable game, once we had eliminated Dad then the game had to be declared a draw as both the boy and I had an even mix of properties and the money was just being swapped across the table.

We love Hotel Tycoon, teaching the boy that sometimes you have to think before you take your move or buy in case you are going to land somewhere expensive. Counting and calculating change was another great lesson, not that we usually deal in 1,000’s of pounds in pocket-money! Hotel Tycoon is already set for great things winning an Independent toy shop award, and we think it is well deserved as it will be a game we play lots this Christmas.

Hotel Tycoon is available in shops online, or from Argos now, for more information visit the website or Facebook page.
