The All New Catch Phrase Board Game

The All New Catch Phrase Board Game from Drumond Park is a game based on the increasingly popular TV show hosted by Stephen Mulhern. You will find all your favourite parts of the show transferred into this fun board game. Recommended for ages 8+, 2-4 players with one player being the game host, and costing RRP £19.99.

We first reviewed this game just before Christmas last year, and have had fun playing, what is a great family game. We discovered that Bingo Granny is very good at this game, and the boy struggled a bit. We decided to team up for a few games to give him a chance. Playing more recently the boy has improved, as he becomes more confident in how the game works. He has enjoyed playing the Catch Phrase board game and as we already had a copy, we decided to pass on the spare one to the hospital where we recently spent the night.

catchphrase from drumond park

The All New Catch Phrase Board game box contains:

  • 96 Double sided regular catch phrase cards
  • 15 Double sided bonus cards
  • 48 Single sided super cards
  • Mr Chips
  • Bonus catch phrase picture frame
  • 9 Window covers
  • Frame clip
  • Sand timer
  • Red filter
  • 60 Asst bank notes

The game starts with one person being decided as host and it is their job to set up each of the rounds award the winners their money and keep the time.

Round 1: Individual Round

In this round each player takes a turn to solve as one individual catch phrase within the length of the timer. If they don’t manage it within the time, then it will be opened up to the other players to try to steal and the fastest answer wins. The correct guess is awarded with £100. The host then reveals one window from the bonus catch phrase (in number order 1-9) and everyone gets one guess. play continues on this round until all 9 windows have been revealed or the correct answer is guessed. The winner receiving £300 to add to their kitty.

Round 2: Rapid Fire Round

This round is played in a similar way to round one, except each of the catch phrases is open for all contestants to answer. You can have as many guesses as you like with a total of 5 catch phrases to be guessed. The correct guess will win £200.

Round 3: Super Catch Phrase Round

For this round the Super Catch phrase cards come into play, with the host setting out 6 cards face down on the super catch phrase board. Starting from the bottom players all have the chance to call out the answers as each catch phrase is revealed. The bottom row wins £300, next row £400 finally with the top row worth £500. The host can check the answers on the bottom of the card with the special red filter.

The winner:

Once you have had the first round a new host takes over, and when everyone has had a go at hosting the winner will be the person with the most money.

can you guess the catchphrase

We still love this game, although as you work your way through the cards the boy has started to memorize some of the answers. The boy also enjoys being the host, and this is done in an enthusiastic style as his current favourite tv channel is challenge! I would like to see a top up set of cards available for this game, and also our My chips who is made from cardboard has started to look a little tatty. This is still a fun family game and if you would like the chance to win a copy then why not enter my giveaway below.

Dobble

Dobble is a great family card game available from Amazon from RRP £12.99. If you have never heard of Dobble until now you are not alone as up till January neither had I. When I was visiting the London Toy Fair with Mary from Over 40 and Mum to One we were invited to give it a try, with mixed results! This game reached the dizzy heights of 27 in the game chart last Christmas, I think it will be set to beat that in 2014 as one of the simplest but fun and handy card games I have tried.

Dobble

Dobble is a round tin containing 55 cards, each with eight symbols (pictures) with only one symbol shared between any two cards. Yes that is it, but here is where the fun starts, with several different variations of how to play lets start with:

Mini Game #1

Shuffle the cards place one face down in front of each player, make the rest of the pile the draw pile, face up in the middle. The object of the game is to shout out the pair of symbols in common with your card. First to shout out wins, and the person with the most cards at the end is the winner.

Dobble Mini Game 1

There are 5 mini games in total and our family favourite is hot potato! Each variation of the game is fun and fast, and can be played with lots of age ranges as you can adapt the rules to suit. Dobble is recommended for 2-8 players ages 6+ but we think this is flexible and you could play in teams, as well as letting the younger ones play snap with the cards.

Dobble will be coming on holiday with us in October, as it will be ideal as the queuing boredom buster, and even Bingo Granny couldn’t complain about the simplicity of learning this new game. Dobble is also available for download in the i-tunes store, and can be played on i devices, with Android and even Facebook versions on their way. Beware! I have found this game highly addictive and so will you, it could even be the new Flappy Birds.

If you would like the chance to find out more about Dobble, have a look at their Facebook page, Esdevium on twitter or buy online from Amazon below.

For the chance to win Dobble for yourself enter my Rafflecopter draw below, and good luck. If you would like to double your chance of winning, why not enter Marys competition too?

Gross Magic

Gross Magic is definitely not for the squeamish, so when we were asked to review this box of gross tricks I thought it would be right up the boys street. Gross Magic is recommended for ages 8+ with an RRP £19.99. The box contains too many parts to list, with posts of slime, props and instructions for over 40 tricks.

gross magic

Some of the Gross Magic tricks in the box are ones that the boy has in other magic sets, but just a little bit more sticky or gross with everything from cockroaches to pots of pretend poo! (Well I hope its pretend) The boy was impressed with the amount of tricks in the box, the instructions detail over 40 tricks, but I am sure that you could make up more as there are plenty of props to work with. I was realy surprised that the boy wasn’t more keen to get his hands dirty with Gross Magic, but he has decided that it was too scary? He wasn’t keen on the plastic cockroaches or the slime opting for the tricks he could perform without having to touch anything. This is not something he would have been worried about when he was 5 or 6 so I wonder if this is a set better suited to this age group.

We set about testing out some of the props and here are a three of our favourite tricks.

As you can see the boy was not particually happy about the tricks, but still managed to perform them easily. I think if he had performed them infront of some mates the enthusiasm may have been different. We both agreed that some of the instructions and tricks were more difficult than others and would need some practice. The set is pretty full of some interesting props and I think any magic fan who is bored of the normal card type tricks would love this set.

whats in the box

Gross Magic is available from toy shops, as well as online stores and you can find out more by having a look at the website here. If you would like the chance to win a set of Gross Magic then why not enter the rafflecopter below, but beware its not for the sqeemish!

Mr Nutcase a New Phone Cover

I treated myself to a new phone last week, Ok I would have loved an i-phone but my budget doesn’t stretch that far so I plumped for a more modest Samsung. Anything has to be better than the Motorola that I have put up with for the last 18 months. To be honest I don’t know how I have stopped myself from putting it through the nearest window!

Back to my new phone, ok so the first plan will be to protect my phone from bumps and knocks, and the sticky boy fingers that I am sure will be coming its way. I would usually go for something cheep, but Mr Nutcase have such a fantastic range of bespoke and personal cases I thought I would design something a little unique for me.

Mr Nutcase certainly is a name that sticks in your mind, and the service was the best I have had in a while. They promise delivery the next day if you order before midday, I ordered after this and still had my case by post the next morning. The case is perfect too, I chose the slightly more expensive flip leather case which I designed with my Soup Dragon on the front. The phone fits tightly into the customer made holder and there is no chance this will come out. The case is very well made and isn’t showing any signs of wear.

I found the website easy to use, and you can choose your own design, or one that has been uploaded to the site. You then choose the layout, wording and even clip art. I like simple style so chose my favourite picture. There is even the chance to put your design forward if you are the arty type and then you earn commission on all orders from other customers using your graphics!

With cases for all the latest models, not just phones but also tablets, you can choose from a snug slim line plastic case or the leather flip version. Prices start from just £14.95 with free shipping and a free screen protector if you like their Facebook page!

So if you fancy something a little special to keep your phone tidy then why not have a look at what Mr Nutcase has to offer!

Now five of my readers will have the chance to win a phone case of their own with this fantastic giveaway from Mr Nutcase, simply fill in the rafflecopter below.

Time Traveling Toby by Graham Jones

Time Traveling Toby by Graham Jones and illustrated by Neil Parkinson is a new book available online for RRP £6.99. With the aim to bring English history to life, the first book in a series, Time Traveling Toby visits the battle of Britain.

The story of Toby a boy living in un unremarkable village, with its rhyming text, and a magic time traveling car is an easy to read book. The story tells of Toby and his brothers and their journey back in time. We start with Toby and his brothers facing the German bombers at Dover, can they raise the alarm in time?

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The book is full of bright illustrations that the boy loves. He seems to have a fascination with anything to do with the war, and the army. This book gently takes children back to a time of their grandparents, but without anything to scary for younger readers and some great facts for the older ones. As a gentle introduction to a difficult topic, I think this is a great book and the boy enjoyed it too. Plenty of information for him to ask questions about and the right amount of detail. I am sure that Toby will be having lots of great adventures and I wonder where he will end up next?

If you would like to find out more about Time Traveling Toby you can visit the website where you can find out more about the book and its creators, you can also find them on Facebook and twitter.
