Dig in from Drumond Park – Review

Dig In is a great new game from Drumond park and one I have been excited to try out since I first saw it at Toy Fair in January. Available now for 2-4 players, aged 8+, RRP £19.99. (No batteries needed)

Dig In captured my attention as it is a simple fun family game that takes no time to learn. The box contains 128 play pieces, Dig In bowl, timer and 12 double-sided cards. After setting up the bowl with playing pieces in the centre of the table, players take a card. The first player has one turn of the timer (15 seconds) to find as many of the playing pieces pictured on the card. The first round the players each get a go on their own. Subsequent rounds it is a free for all and the only additional rule is they may only search one-handed.

dig-in-from-drumond-park

The winner of the round is the first to correctly find all the pieces on their card, and the winner of three cards is the Dig In winner! The cards have two sides coloured and grey. The grey meaning that you can collect that piece in any colour, we actually found this more tricky so experimented playing both ways in a game to mix it up.

Dig in, in its simplicity makes it a great game for Christmas, as everyone can join in quickly. Don’t be fooled into thinking that the lack of rules makes Dig In easier for the parents to win. There was plenty of hand slapping and some devious tactics from the one-handed Dragon Dad. The pieces themselves when on their own are easily identifiable, but when in the Dig In mix telling and ice cream from a rocket is a little more tricky. Dig in is a fast and furious game that we have loved playing as a family and cant wait to share with our visitors over the festive season.

British History Timeline – Review

British History is the latest edition to the Timeline series of games. You can buy British History now online or from your local toy store for RRP £13.99 suited ages 8+ for 2-8 players.

The British History edition of Timeline is a great addition to the series and can be played on its own or mixed into the other timeline games. The lovely handy storage tin contains 110 historical cards, and instructions. British History Timeline is so easy to learn that we now just have a quick game when we don’t have time for a whole board game set up. We decided that Bingo Granny might be good at British History so tested it out on her most recent visit.

british-history-timeline

You don’t need lots of room to set up the game so British Timeline is the perfect family on the move game. Players start with 4 random cards, and one card is turned face up with the date. Players then take turns placing their cards where they think they belong in the timeline. The winner is the one who can place all of their cards.

british-history

We love this game as it causes so many questions. It is a great multi generation game as we found age doesn’t always help. It can be played tactically by placing the cards you have no idea where they go early. Saving the ones you know the dates can make you the winner. Dad Dragon has found the game he can beat us at as he has a good memory for dates. The boy does well too as once played he too remembers the dated cards.

british-history-timeline-game

We love the addition of the Brexit card, a great one to start with! The boy also loves to just sit and build his own timelines like a game of solitaire. He is learning about British history and keeping himself amused at the same time. British History Timeline is a great game as a Christmas stocking filler, and is great as a whole family game.

British Timeline is available now from Amazon (affiliate link below) and all good retailers.

Doctor Panic – Review

Doctor Panic is a family game for 2-9 players aged 8+ distributed by Esdevium games for RRP £24.99.

Doctor Panic is a true team game, where instead of competing against each other you work as a team against the clock. There are lots of parts in the game box with a total of 8 individual tests, various cards, tweezers and even medical hair nets! You will need plenty of space to play Doctor Panic. Starts by downloading the app to your phone, or visit the website for a soundtrack. At first Doctor Panic looks complicated, but the app allows you to play a short test game to get you familiar with the set up.

doctor panic

Doctor Panic can be played in teams so we decided to start off as one team with the three of us. The rule book details each of the set ups for cards and instruments ready for you to do each test. We downloaded the app to the boys IPad, but after it crashed twice mid game, switched to my phone. This worked fine and we managed to complete the test game.

doctor panic review

The game is made more fun by the beeping of the app. Having to complete each test task as quick as possible. For each game you will need to choose the person who will act as the head and wear the hair net. The Doctor Panic game starts by dealing out 8 cards, one from each of the test card packs. Shuffle and these will form the order of the tests for your team. Start the app and follow the instructions to save your patients.

doctor panic game

You have 12 minutes to complete all the tests, and the heart beat bleeping means the patient is still alive. At any time they could go into cardiac arrest. This is signalled by a continuous bleeping, you must stop all tests and while one of you uses the heart whoopee cushion to keep your patient alive others make the code ready to shock the patient back to life.

doctor panic family game

Mix in a few Managers calls and funny tasks and Doctor Panic becomes a very active and funny laughter filled game. The tests are a mixture of skills, we found some are more funny than others. I think our favourites are the x-ray test and describing how to make funny shapes with your body. The boy liked examination with the magnifying glass and also suturing test. The game ends when either you run out of time, or you complete all the tests before the end of the 12 minutes.

Doctor Panic board game

There are different levels from easy to hard, and 8 different patients which change the game of Doctor Panic. Add in additional teams if you have more players. I think the only thing stopping more people joining in would be lack of space! Doctor Panic is a fast, fun and enjoyable short game that is suitable for all ages. Younger kids will love using the whoopee cushion, and resuscitating the patients. I can see this game being a great one for big gatherings.Playing outdoors with more space for the funny poses and managers forfeits would make this game perfect for the summer.

Carcassonne – Review

Carcassonne is an award-winning strategy game available on line or visit the Esdevium website for local stockists, for 2-5 players, aged 7+, RRP £27.99.

I was excited to see what the soup dragon family would think of the game of Carcassonne as I had seen it at the London toy fair in January and thought that we would enjoy this style of strategy game. The box contains a score board, 45 coloured playing pieces, 84 land tiles and a rules booklet. At first glance I thought Carcassonne might be a bit tricky to learn, but despite quite a large amount of rules, there are additional ones that are not needed for your first game.

carcassonne

The game play of Carcassonne is simple, each player takes turns choosing and placing a land tile. A little like a jigsaw each piece can have a road, city or monastery. You choose a colour of playing piece (called meeples) one stays on the score board the others are used to take ownership of city’s or roads as they are built. Players take turns to do three things. First you draw and place a land tile, next place a meeples (if you want) and next you score any completed feature.

carcassonne board game

Learning what will score the most, and where to place your meeples is the most difficult part of the game to learn. But we have found once learnt we were happy to add in the additional scoring rules like adding rivers, and even farmers which all score differently and change the layout of the game. You will need a nice clear space as your city’s grow, as even though there is no board, the land tiles need space so you can add to them without having to move the whole game.

We have played Carcassonne as a 2,3 and 4 player game, although Bingo Granny wasn’t exactly sure what she was doing! The boy has enjoyed building up the cities and scoring. Dad Dragon enjoyed the strategy aspect, and I liked finding new ways to try and win. Carcassonne is a nice easy and relatively quick game to play, the box suggests an average game takes 35 minutes, we found a more competitive game took a little longer at 45 minutes. Once you think you have mastered Carcassonne there are expansion packs to change the basic game, and this is a great way to expand the game, so you don’t get bored with it.

carcassonne game

Carcassonne has already found a place in our regular Sunday game/puzzle mornings, and will be one that we can enjoy playing for some time as it makes you think hard about your moves as you play. If you would like the chance to play Carcassonne with your family then why not enter my gleam giveaway below.

Ticket to Ride Europe – Review

Ticket to Ride Europe is a board game from Esdevium Games, suitable for ages 8+ RRP £32.99 available from Amazon and other toy stockists.

Ticket to Ride Europe is a strategy game, but don’t be put off once the rules are learnt it is like Monopoly addictive! The box contains Board map of Europe, 240 coloured trains, 15 stations, 110 train cards, 6 long routes, 40 short routes, 5 score markers and rules.

ticket to ride europe

I was daunted by the size of the rule book, but once we had a test game it was actually much more straight forward to play Ticket to ride Europe. To set up the game each player picks a colour of train, stations and playing token. Then you deal each player one long route, 3 short route and 4 train cards. To start you have the chance to discard all but one of your dealt route cards. Think carefully as this is your only chance to get rid of these route cards.

ticket to ride

Ticket to Ride game play is then made up of 3 options, to take additional routes, place trains on the board, or collect the cards needed for completion of trains. This was the part we found was tactical. With the boy playing we found it was ok for him to have his route cards face up so he could see them all easily. When I play Ticket to ride Europe with Dad Dragon we use scrabble rests so we can keep our routes hidden. Game play continues with building, collecting and getting in the way of your opponents.

Claiming a train route involves matching cards to the board, and there are different rules for tunnels and ferry’s. Some involve you using your Train cards which act as jokers and come in very handy. If someone else steals a route you wanted then you have the option of adding stations to use their trains. The game ends when a player gets to their last 2 trains, and the winner is the person scoring the most. You score each time you place a train, each route you complete, unused stations and who has the longest train.

ticket to ride europe review

The whole family has loved playing Ticket to Ride Europe, and we have played as 2,3 and 4, players. Once you have 4 or more players you can use double routes and this changes the game play and tactics a little as well as filling the board up quicker. Game play takes us around an hour, or longer with new players. Most of this time is getting to know the board and place names as they are not all familiar. Once you get used to where on the map they are play defiantly speeds up. We are addicted to playing this game, and have been having adult game sessions when the boy has gone to bed. I love having found a game that makes you think and love the level of strategy needed for this game. We have had some close matches and are currently drawing so there will be a rematch coming soon!

If you would like the chance to get to know Ticket to Ride Europe why not enter my Gleam giveaway below. Ticket to Ride Europe is available via my Amazon affiliate link below. With different editions available and expansion packs Ticket to ride is a game that I’m sure will become a family favourite.

Barbecue Party – review

Barbecue Party is a fun family game from Drumond Park for ages 4+ RRP £19.99 and has had us all giggling with its easy to learn gameplay.

Barbecue party has already won a few family awards. We found it quick and fun set up with the addition of googly eyes to the food and we were ready to BBQ! Barbecue Party is a great balancing game, for 2-4 players. The winner is the first person to successfully cook and rescue 3 food items from the grill( 4 for adults). The winner will be crowned master chef! The box contains, the Barbecue party grill base and doesn’t need battery’s. A grill plate, 16 assorted foods, a pair of tongs and 17 cards.

barbecue party

Set up of the grill is simple with a switch to the side of the red barbecue, place the grill on top and you are ready to play. Play starts with the youngest, and you take it in turns to take a card and place that item of food on the barbecue. If your card matches a food already grilling on the barbecue then you get to take it off. Remove it without upsetting the grill and you get to keep it with the card. Send the food flying and it will all be returned to the middle and you start again. There is one joker card allowing you to remove any item from the grill.

barbecue party game

We found this game very simple and fun, and think it will be perfect fun for ages 4+ although we agreed that maybe it was a bit too easy for the boy. Granny enjoyed the game, and loved the silly faces on the food. We certainly had lots of giggles adding eyes to the food, even if this was only for setting up the game for the first time. It certainly put a smile on our faces, and I can imagine the giggles it would cause from younger children playing this game. I love that it didn’t need batteries, so the barbecue will be ready to go whenever you fancy a party!

Rapidough – Review and Giveaway

Rapidough is a great fun family game from Drumond Park, for ages 8+ playing with two teams (minimum of 4 players) and has a RRP of £24.99. The boy was excited to play Rapidough as I had told him how we had played this game many years ago with friends, and just how bad Dad Dragon was at making things with dough!

rapidough review

So with Bingo Granny arriving for Mothers Day dinner, the challenge was set to play Rapidough. Bingo Granny was keen to find out more and had a little practice with the boy before he decided on teaming up with me, against Granny and Dad. Rapidough is such a simple game and such laugh out loud fun that I knew everyone would enjoy it.

Setup: The box contains two of each, mats, dough, knife, plunger as well as a box of 300 word cards. Choose your teams, and dough colour from the blue and yellow. Then decide from the packs of cards which ones you are going to use. There are three packs Pack one has only one word which must be modelled. Pack 2 has three words and you can choose which you make. Pack 3 have two words on coloured backgrounds which you model the word the same colour as your dough.

rapidough models

Modelling rules are simple as anything goes, and you decide before the game if you are happy for modellers to animate their creations. Modellers start at the same time and race the other team to make and get the correct guess before their opposing team. Sometimes this happens very fast other times it can be slower as more detailed modeling is needed. The first team to model and guess correctly win and steal a plug of dough from the other team. The winner is the one with dough left when the other team run out!

Rapidough has to be a game I remember being fond of playing as I love the dough modelling, and the creations can be so funny. Especially Dad Dragon as he is not the most creative person. The boy is always keen to win and we set of at a great pace winning the first two rounds and stealing dough from a reluctant Bingo Granny. Our opponents soon pulled back with the next few rounds and for some time it was pretty level. Then the boy made a fantastic Statue of Liberty, which even Dad had to admit was very creative. I think however our opponents were cheating a little with less modelling and more gesturing going on.

rapidough

The boy and I won the day with a final flourish, and I have to say it was lovely to see him so happy and engrossed in a game. There was much laughter mostly at Dad trying to make an animal, and then trying to stop the boy from taking dough. Rapidough is defiantly a game for stay in-doors family fun. So if you are stuck for something to play with your family on a wet day we can thoroughly recommend Rapidough. If like us you are a smaller family of 3, then don’t worry as the boy invented his own modelling guessing game. He modelled the words and I had to guess the answers, the rules can also be adjusted as suits your family, and even little kids can team up with grown ups to be guesser’s.

You can buy Rapidough from your local toy retailer or online using this Amazon affiliate link

Honestech Stopmotion Studio 4.0 – Review

Honestech Stopmotion Studio 4.0 is a great way to capture and animate your own films and movies. With more emphasis being put on IT as a subject in schools and the introduction of coding as part of the national curriculum from September 2014, getting children used to using software and creating their own animations is a great way to help them at home. Honestech Stopmotion Studio is available from Currys for RRP £59.99, but is on offer with £10 discount so is down to £49.99, also available online.

The boy and I were excited to try out this software, as we have made a few stop start animations in the past including this fun Lego one. The software was super easy to install from the disc, and once registered online we were set to go. You will have to have your own video camera (webcam or Camcorder) and microphone to use this software, but interestingly it also supports the use of some DSLR cameras. We used a web camera, and found this easy to set up as the software instantly recognised it.

The Honestech Stopmotion Studio comes with a quick set up guide, which I found very useful, but most of the functions of the software were easy enough to work out. Encouraging the boy to think of a story and find some props, he decided to produce an animation with Kermit the frog. We looked at how to capture the images, and then moved onto the sound and adding music. The boy found the auto capture easy to use as the sound alerts you to when the next picture will be taken and has an onscreen countdown. You can also set how many seconds you would like between each shot which is useful.

We tried using the green screen function with limited success, and I think this would have worked better if we had a plain coloured background rather than replacing the carpet colour. The boy liked the record function and you are able to move the sound file to the frame where you want it to start. The only thing I found frustrating was that you have no control over the music or recorded volume. It was good that you could add both though as you could add in your own sound effects. Like all software I would save often to avoid loosing vital work Like I did, but on a second attempt I found the Stopmotion studio had saved all the recorded files so they hadn’t been lost.

We loved the onion skin effect which allows you to line up each of the frames you take. There is also a function where you can add in your own images as backgrounds. You have all sorts of fine adjustments with this software like frame speed, contrast and brightness. It was also easy to change the frame order and even flip images. With the addition of text, subtitles it would be easy to produce professional looking stories in full HD.

Here is the boys little film, and for something that took less than an hour to make I think it was good fun. Hopefully it will inspire the boy to try something a little more complicated next time.

Overall the Honestech Stopmotion Studio 4.0 has to be the easiest to pick up software we have tried. It was super easy to publish directly to your you tube account, or save as HD quality films on your computer. There are even setting for ipad/ipod which would come in useful for kids who have these gadgets! This software is defiantly something the boy easily managed to pick up on his own, and once you have a good filming area set up endless hours of storytelling.

Both the boy and I give Honestech Stopmotion Studio a big thumbs up, and look forward to testing out our animation skills over the half term holidays. I can see many hours of fun making more of our fun Lego inspired films. I’m thinking of a star wars epic or maybe something with our new lego fencer? The possibilities are endless.
