Logo Lite from Drumond Park – Review

Logo Lite from Drumond Park is a great new standalone game which can also be used as a top up pack for the popular Logo Board Game. Suitable for ages 12+ and for 2-4 players, RRP £19.99 Logo Lite is a neat and portable family game.

The Logo Lite box contains 264 Logo cards in a plastic holder, 4 pieces to make up the playing circle, 24 coloured counters, spinner and rules. Set up is quick and simple, as you slot the four coloured disc holders together to for a ring, the spinner then sits inside. shuffle your question cards and you are ready to play.

logo lite

The Logo series of board games have been something we have enjoyed playing as a family and Logo Lite is no exception. Like the Logo Board game the questions fall into 3 categories, picture cards pot luck, and theme cards. Play is simple the youngest player starts and the person to their left becomes the first question master. A card is chosen from the front of the box and each question is asked to the first player. Answer correctly and you can spin the spinner and collect the corresponding coloured counter to add to your coloured holder. Get it wrong and the question is passed to the next player until either someone answers or you run out of players. (2 player games don’t pass the question on)

The Logo Lite winner is the first one to get one of each coloured counter on their section of the coloured holder. This may take a while, as you wait for the spinner to land on the right coloured segment! Logo Lite has proved to be a fun game and one that the boy enjoys. Some of the question cards have subjects he doesn’t recognise, so to even out the play of the game we give him 5 opportunities to pass on a card that he knows nothing about. We still found enough topics that he did recognize with a nice mix of questions including subjects on toys, cars and food.

logo lite from drumond park

The boy loves to spend time being question master so we have found after playing a proper game he enjoys quizzing us on the topics to see how much we know or can remember. We think Logo Lite is a great edition of the Logo series of board games and will be popular this year, especially as there is no board to set up, and it could be played almost anywhere. I love the addition of the question box to keep the cards neat and it is much easier to see the front and back of the cards. If you fancy treating your family to Logo Lite this Christmas then have a look at my affiliate link below. Logo lite is also available from all good toy shops, or why not have a go and enter my competition below.

The lovely people at Drumond Park have been kind enough to give me two copies of Logo Lite for you to win, which would be a great way to start 2016. If you would like the chance to win Logo Lite then simply use the Gleam app, and don’t forget to leave a comment, good luck!

Christmas Craft with Baker Ross

Baker Ross are a great place to look for craft packs and we were sent a selection from their Christmas range to try out for ourselves. There is a craft to suit everyone and every pocket with packs from as little as 99p.

christmas craft

With so many to choose from the boy wanted to start with the Gingerbread Decorations Sewing Kits, so we worked together to make the cute little Gingerbread house. This Christmas Craft kit comes in a pack of three with a boy and girl gingerbread man, and a little house. The kits had everything included in the kit and the best part was that you didn’t need any glue, as the decorative parts of the kit have a sticky backing. The Gingerbread Christmas craft has felt shapes to sew together and then felt decorations to add to your creation. There is a plastic safety needle, wool, ribbon and simple picture instructions to guide you.

christmas craft gingerbread

Use the wool threaded onto the neat safety needle to simply stitch together your matching felt shapes. The holes are pre punched so this is a great Christmas craft even for little fingers. You will need to leave a gap to pop in your stuffing, and then sew up the gap. The boy found using the needle easy and the fact he couldn’t hurt himself gave him the confidence to be able to sew this project on his own. It is then as simple as decorating and popping on the ribbon to finish of your Christmas decoration.

christmas crafts sewing

The boy has been making Christmas crafts with his Cub group and they all enjoy making  something different each year. The bonus of working towards a badge is always good to encourage boys to get crafty. This year the boy made a candle from the mouldable wax which warms in your hand, and becomes soft enough to make your own wax creation. (£7.99 per pack) The boy also coloured in this cute Santa to pop in his bedroom window.

christmas craft with baker ross

Our little Gingerbread house decoration looks lovely on our tree and would make a fantastic gift for one of the boys grandparents. Have a look at the Baker Ross website for this Christmas Craft which is available for £3.60 for the 3 piece set. I have found that Christmas crafts are something that the boy and I can do together once school has broken up, and there is nothing nicer than spending time chatting over a string of paper chains and a pot of glue. The boy is very excited to be decorating his bedroom this year so I think I will let him loose with the snowman house kit available for £1.99, perfect for the wet dark winter holidays. Visit Baker Ross on Pinterest for inspiration or visit their blog here.

Santa’s Final Preparations – Ravensburger Christmas Puzzle

Christmas is the perfect time to sit down as a family and complete a puzzle, so Santa’s Final Preparations is a great puzzle for celebrating the season. This limited edition Ravensburger puzzle is available now for RRP £12.99 suited to ages 10+

Santa’s Final Preparations is the 19th Limited Edition Christmas Puzzle developed by our British marketing and design team, and illustrated by Devon-based artist Roy Trower.
This heart-warming design is only available for Christmas 2015, so catch it while you can! – Ravensburger team

santa's final preparations

I have never done a Christmas puzzle before so was excited to see if Santa’s Final Preparations would hold my attention. With the cute illustrations and traditional feel, I was captivated from the first piece, despite the box looking quite red in colour there wasn’t as much red in the puzzle itself. Having had a debate on twitter earlier in the week on the right place to start a puzzle, I had to start with the edges.

santas final preparations ravensburger

There is plenty of small detail in Santa’s final preparations, from the toys all neatly tagged to the sweet hidden cats and cheeky elves. I found that blue was the standout colour to start me off, followed by sorting the red. I found faces and writing next then it was down to a piece by piece analysis. I find this system works for me, interestingly from the twitter chat different people have different techniques. I found that the red piece were the final pieces that I placed in this puzzle. I love how Ravensburger take such care to make every piece unique and details you don’t at first notice now pop out of the picture.

santas final preparations puzzle

I have thoroughly enjoyed completing Santa’s final preparations with some help from the boy who loved the little woodland characters peeping in at the door. I think this puzzle has something for everyone, while still maintaining a traditional feel. Ravensburger puzzles make great gifts all year round, and Santa’s Final Preparation will be a great puzzle to while away the winter hours.

OG on the Bog – Review

OG on the BOG, is a fun new game from Drumond Park, for 2-4 players aged 5+ RRP £22.99. Something for the family to enjoy this Christmas.

Don’t be put off by the title of this game, as it will be enjoyed by young and old, and even had the boy giggling. The box comes with OG in his Bog, there is a small amount assembly needed as you add the handle to the Bog door. There are 12 loo rolls a tree stump spinner card, and instructions. You will also need to install 3 AA batteries (not included).

og on the bog

The game play for OG on the BOG is straight forward and fast to learn. Start by assembling OG in his bog and turn the switch to on. You will hear OG snoring and sounds of the forest. load 6 of the loo rolls onto the pole by the bog door. Then starting with the youngest player take it in turns to spin the spinner. A red cross means end of your go. Hand holding loo roll means steal from another player. A green tick means its time to sneak up on OG!

og on the bog game

Sneak up to OG, and press the step outside, if he has heard you he will say something and your go is over. Hear grunts and even farts and its time to steal one of the loo rolls from outside the door. As carefully as you can remove one of the toilet rolls from the pole outside OG’s Bog. But beware if the toilet explodes you will lose two of your collected toilet rolls. The winner of OG on the Bog is the first person to collect 4 rolls ( with 2 or 3 players) or 3 rolls (with 4 players).

drumond park game

I thought the boy might be a little old for this game, but it turns out that farting, toilet humour and monsters is ageless for boys! We spent a fun hour playing with OG on the Bog, and Dad especially enjoyed winning, and making the bog explode. This is a fun game, that I can see the boy enjoying playing with his mates as it would certainly cause some giggles. For younger players OG on the Bog will be good for learning patience, and hand control as they sneak the loo rolls off the pole. The noises coming from Og on the Bog certainly made us all chuckle.

OG on the bog is already getting nominated as one of the top games for this Christmas, and I can see it being very popular with everyone after a big Christmas dinner. Available now in all toy stores, or via my Amazon affiliate link below.

Big Ben Silhouette puzzle from Ravensburger – Review

The Big Ben Silhouette puzzle from Ravensburger is new and part of a different style of shaped puzzle. with 1,155 pieces and measuring approx. 78cm x 101cm I would say this puzzle would be suited to age 10 and over RRP £14.99.

big ben silhouette

The Big Ben silhouette puzzle looked very different and I was excited to get started, sorting the pieces proved tricky as they have rounded edges, and this confused the boy when he came to help out. The next part of construction is usually to assemble the outside, this proved more tricky as not all the outside pieces join. It was at this point that I also discovered the unique specially shaped cut outs of London, the box hints that there is a big ben, but infact there are 3 hidden shapes with in the picture of this puzzle.

big ben

I found this puzzle compelling and finished it in about 4/5 hours there are lots to keep your interest, and the bright colours are very eye catching. I used to love round puzzles when I was little and this took me back to the days when I would sit in my room finishing my fairy jigsaws. The puzzle contains all the landmarks that you would expect to find in London, from busses to tower bridge, and the quality of the image is great too.

big ben silhouette puzzle

I loved every minute of this jigsaw, and will be adding the dolphin to my Christmas list. The pieces are up to the usual Ravensburger standard and the addition of the three specially shaped mini puzzles certainly made me smile. The boy decided he wanted to complete the puzzle by adding these and was pleased that he had been able to help.

Click below for my affiliate link to the Big Ben silhouette puzzle or visit the Ravensburger website to see the other city’s and shapes in the range. There is even a Darth Vader one for the boys!

Gee Whizz – Review

Gee Whizz is a great new magical box of tricks from Drumond Park. Aimed at children aged 5+, RRP £19.99 this set is a mix of magic tricks and illusions to make the mind boggle.

The box contains instructions for 15 tricks and illusions as well as all the props you will need and of course a special magic wand. The only extras you will need are imagination, and in the case of the boy a good hat!

gee whizz

The boy’s interest in magic has been reignited after we saw a really good close up magician at our campsite in France. He was super keen to try out Gee Whizz and see if there was anything different in this box of tricks. I think he was pleasantly surprised as we have found in the past that some magic sets can be a little flimsy, small or sometimes don’t have all the props included. This can be frustrating if you don’t happen to have a coin of handkerchief handy. Gee Whizz doesn’t have this problem as even with the tricks that needed different parts all the bits are in the box. Add in the super clear guide with detailed colour pictures and we were in for a great magic show.

gee whizz contents

The boy started off with the wand trick which I have to say is very different, and rather cute. Making the feather flowers appear from nowhere is easy and great fun, add in some dramatic moves and your audiences will be wowed. Next out of the Gee Whizz box was the rope trick. This was something the French magician had done, and the boy was soon adding flair to the trick which had me baffled for a while. By far the favourite trick was where’s Polly? With the boys newly named wand “Steve” he could make the parrot fly around the room and appear in a different cage. This is a great trick if you have a child who loves to tell a story like the boy does.

instructions

The Gee Whizz box also contains some clever illusions, a spinning top that changes colour and even cards for you to practice your shadow puppetry. The boy had a great time trying to invent new tricks with the cards, and even put on a mini magic show for us which included some card tricks he had taught himself from YouTube. I would say the only disappointing part of this set is the flimsy box, it would have been nice to have a sturdy box to keep the tricks in, or even a nice little magicians bag. We think this Gee Whizz set would be a perfect starter set for any child and even young ones will love adding their flair to put on their own magic shows.

You can buy Gee Whizz now from toy stockists, click my amazon link below or  visit the Drumond Park website for more information. I can see Gee Whizz being a very popular Christmas gift this year.

We have been given a Gee Whizz box to share with you. Simply complete the gleam app, and answer the question in a comments below.

Sshh! Don’t Wake Dad NEW Drumond Park game – Review

Shhh don’t wake dad is a brand new family game from Drumond park, and is available now in plenty of time for Christmas. Recommended for ages 5+, 2-4 players this game will be a great hit this Christmas for families all over the country.

The box contains a playing board, 4 coloured playing pieces, a spinner, rules, 16 cards and of course dad in his bed complete with alarm clock.

The game set up is easy with 2 AA batteries to insert into the bed unit (not included), and a couple of coloured stickers to add to the blanket of dads bed. The boy and I then set up the board which was simple to fold out, and with an equal amount of cards dealt to each player the youngest then starts. Dad is then twisted, and faceplanted onto the pillow. The boy thought this was very funny and with the addition of dads snoring when the switch is turned on means this game will be filled with giggles from start to finish.

sssh dont wake dad

The aim of the game is to get to the fridge and the large chocolate cake without waking dad, cards are dealt to each player and placed face up in front of them. Simply take turns to spin the spinner and move to the next coloured square on the board. Each square has a picture and number, if the square you land on has a picture, the same as one of your cards you are safe. If you don’t have that card, then the next step is to press dads alarm clock the same number of times as the number on your square. But remember “Shhh don’t wake dad!” As he will jump up out of bed, catch you sneaking past and send you back to the start. There are some extra rules which help game play, the first is, you get to take the matching game card for the square you are on if you end up waking dad. Secondly that only one player can be on a coloured square at any one time, so you can move further ahead to the next available empty coloured square.

sssh dont wake dad drumond park

If like me you are a naturally jumpy person then when dad jumps up there will much hilarity! As Dad makes me jump out of my skin, yes every time. Shhh don’t wake dad, is such a simple yet fun game that I think it would be difficulty to dislike this game. We certainly had great fun making dad do his faceplants and trying to get past him. It turns out that this game can take some time to play and isn’t over as quickly as you would first think. Of course the boy was the first winner, sneaking as far as the bed and not getting caught. We love the addition of having the squares over dads bed which means that other players can also get caught out. This game is perfectly suited for a family get together and as the rules are easy to learn and understand Shhh don’t wake dad will be fun for younger family members.

We have thoroughly enjoyed playing shhh don’t wake day, and think you will too. If you would like the chance to win shhh don’t wake day in time for your next family get together, then why not enter my giveaway below.

Make ‘N’ Break – Review

Make ‘N’ Break is a fun family game from Ravensburger,  suitable for 2-4 players ages 8+ and RRP £19.99.

This is the perfect game for players of all ages to play together, and the boy was soon showing us all how this game should be played. The rules are super simple which means that game play is quick to learn, so great for guests over the holidays. Simply throw the number dice to see how many minutes you have on the timer. Set the timer, shuffle the cards and begin. Each of the cards has a picture of how to arrange the 12 different coloured blocks. It is your job to copy the picture as quickly as you can before moving onto the next one.

make n break

There are two types of card, some have outlines, these you can use any coloured block for. The second card is coloured and has to be copied exactly, but be careful as there are some light and dark blocks of the same colour. Once the timer is up count up your points and pass onto the next player. Score each of your goes from the numbers printed on the cards, and the highest score after 5 goes wins. You can if you want, vary the rounds as the red numbered cards are slightly easier than the blue, but we found it was speed that counted in the end.

make n break game

Make ‘N’ Break is a great fun, fast game that needs little or no set up, and apart from a steady hand and a good table you need very little space for this game. We have enjoyed playing Make ‘N’ Break and introduced it to Granny last week who found it very frustrating! I love this game, everything from the simple rules, easy game play and multigenerational gameplay. I did beat the boy a few times, but he is now very fast and with a lucky roll can beat most of us.

playing make n break

I have recommended Make ‘N’ Break to friends who have a mixture of different age children in the house as this is not a game that will cause too many arguments, and unless you are colour blind everyone can play. I know Make ‘N’ Break is suggested for 8+ but the boy has been making new rules and even playing solo challenges, something younger children may enjoy.

This is the first Ravensburger game that we have owned, and like the puzzles this game is well made, cleverly thought out, and even the storage box feels good quality. I think we will be looking at some of the other Ravensburger games for friends over the holidays, and I know already that a few have made it onto my wish list.

Disclaimer we were sent a copy of Make ‘N’ break for review the opinions remain our own and have not been altered.

Lighting your home this winter

Lighting your home in the winter can be tricky. With such a huge choice of table, floor and pendant lights in so many different colours shapes and sizes sometimes I feel bewildered by the choice. I certainly found the lack of light noticeable this year on our return from Florida. The light levels are defiantly lower during the day, and my whole house seemed grey and in need of cheering up! Changing the way you light your home can make such a difference. Not only can it make your home feel warm and inviting, but it can banish the winter blues.

In preparation for putting up the Christmas tree in a couple of weeks time I thought I would have a think about how I light the lounge. I have a couple of table lights which give a soft warm glow and are nice to watch TV by, but have come from our old house and don’t really go with anything. Sometimes we need more focused light as the boy likes to build his Lego models, and needs good lighting to see the instructions clearly, and the only bright light I have comes from the ceiling lights.

lighting your home this winter

I have energy-saving bulbs in my ceiling lights, which I know save me money but I do find can be a little yellow in colour. This isn’t helped by my brown lampshades so maybe its time for a change. I was looking for something not to modern that would still be bright enough to read by, but without being too bright. This Rihanna Flush Ceiling Fitting – Chocolate and Brushed Gold from Homebase, would be perfect and fit well with my colour scheme.

141634_R_Z001

This Living Skittle Rattan Floor Lamp, would compliment my scheme and look perfect in the days after Christmas when you take the tree down and the house feels dusty and a bit duller!

185714_R_Z001

Finally I think a new floor standing reading lamp would be just the thing for the boy, he can sit at the dining table and spread his Lego projects out and construct to his heart’s content!
