The Secret Spy Workshop is a fun kit from Interplay aimed at children aged 6+ and with an RRP of £12.99.
At first glance it may not seem that you get much for your money, but this kit has surprising contents. I left the boy to explore this kit while I was making tea, and although he is pretty good at putting things together wasn’t sure how he would get on. The box contains:
- Scenery insert
- Big and small mirrors
- Die-cut sheets
- Double sided sticky tape
- Plastic beads
- Bendy mirror
- Tracing paper
- Plastic box
- EVA foam
- Grids card
- Colour Instruction Manual
This doesn’t take up much of the box, but what I did like about this kit that made it different from others we have tried is that you have enough pieces to do activities more than once. The boy built the spy snooper with no help from me, and I was surprised to see what I thought were real mirrors. On closer inspection these highly shiny mirrors are made from plastic so perfectly safe for kids to use, and wont break if dropped.
The boy was soon onto the magic money-box, which has to be the best part of the kit. He assembled this easily, and we love the glittery inserts as well as the funny fish. Its is a very convincing optical illusion and something the boy enjoyed working out. He has now hidden some secret messages in the box and wants to pass them onto his friends.
Finally we moved onto secret coding. This was well-timed as we were looking at coded messages and especially Morse code this weekend at cubs. Using the Anamorphic spy code to draw a picture of the house then using a mirror to reshape the picture the boy was very impressed with this new form of coding. He decided that he would write some secret messages for his friends, and then teach them how to decode them.
The Secret Spy workshop has been a lot of fun, not just making the objects but trying them out. The boy who is 9 found them easy to put together on his own, and only needed help with how to work out the coding grid. The Boy says:
This is awesome, now I can hide all my special things from Dad, and write letters to my friends, that only they can read.
