Jamie Raven Card Magic – Review

Jamie Raven Card Magic is one of four magic sets available online from Paul Lamond RRP £10.95 suitable for ages 8+.

Ok, so it is confession time as we didn’t know who Jamie Raven was, but the boy has always loved magic sets. We were excited to see what the Jamie Rave Card Magic box contained . The box includes a two packs of cards, a mystery box with spare cards and a secret membership card which gives you access online to the tricks.

The boy was a little puzzled that the Jamie Raven card magic set doesn’t contain any instructions, but once you have accessed the internet and been emailed the link it all became clear. ( My email went to spam so check there if you don’t get an instant reply)

Jamie Raven is the self-proclaimed runner-up, or “First placed Human” from Britain’s got talent series 2015. His website is easy to navigate, and once the boy had learnt the first trick he was keen to learn some more. Each trick video is easy to follow as Jamie performs the trick for you to watch, followed by a step by stem explanation of how it works and finally some tips on performance.

The boy learnt 4 very simple but amazingly effective tricks which he was then able to perform confidently on Bingo granny. He certainly had us all thinking and I loved the mind reading trick as I had no idea how it was don’t until the boy showed me. We decided you could do variations of each trick and could see how you could make them your own with a few simple additions!

We all had great fun learning Jamie Raven Card Magic tricks. The boy liked the easy to learn from videos and Jamies presentation style means I think anyone could easily master these tricks.

Visit Jamie Ravens website for more information on the trick sets available, or purchase your set from my affiliate link below.

Star Wars Timeline – Review

Star Wars Timeline is an easy to learn game like the other Timeline games. Players place their dealt cards in the order the scenes appeared in the films. Sounds easy? Well it proved more difficult than we first thought.

Star Wars timeline is available from stores and online and comes in two editions. The first covers the original three star wars films (episode IV, V and VI) and the second edition the prequel of films (I, II, III). Each Tin contains 110 cards and are suited for ages 8+. 2-8 players and RRP £13.99.

Star Wars Timeline is already a favourite game and will make a great gift for any Star Wars fan. The boy was excited as he stood a real chance of beating Dad Dragon. The question would be how much could he remember? The answer was more than his Dad! Each of the cards comes with a scene or quote from the film and then these are numbered on the reverse so that you can check where in the sequence they appear.

There are plenty of easily recognizable scenes like the incident in the trash compactor or the first sighting of the death star. Putting them in order though caused much discussion in the family. It isn’t until you turn over the car that you can see which of the films your quote appears so even remembering which film was fun. Once we had completed a few games we discovered that the boy was indeed very good at remembering exactly where in a film a scene or character first appeared.

Star Wars Timeline is my whole families favourite card game for 2016, and is the perfect game for us to take with us and play with family over the holidays. My only disappointment is that the Star Wars edition of timeline cannot be played with any of the history editions. This I guess was to be expected with a fictional story, but somehow might have been fun!. Each Star Wars Timeline edition can be played on its own or mixed up with the other edition to play as a huge timeline game. This could be played with more players and I think will be a fun game to play with all the boys nephews.

The Game about Wikipedia

The Game about Wikipedia is a new game from Spin Master games and is a celebration of the well-known online encyclopaedia. Suitable for 2 – 4 Players aged 8+ RRP £16.99.

The game about Wikipedia box contains 300 wiki theme cards, 4 whiteboards with markers, 100 tokens and an egg timer. Game play is easy to learn and the winner is the one at the end with the most tokens.

wikipedia

Starting with the youngest player you draw a wiki theme card, each contains 3 games. The first is a trivia question. Turn over the timer read out the question and the other players make a note of the answers on their wipe clean board. Questions might be For which James Bond film did Roald Dahl write the screenplay? Other questions have multiple choice answers and there are 3 tokens available for the right answers.

The next part of the game about Wikipedia is all about page views. The timer is turned and the three subjects are read out players then rank these as to how many views they get on Wikipedia in an average month. One token is received for each correct answer.

the-game-about-wiki

Finally players are challenged to list 5 items in the disambiguation section. In this section all the players answer. Match your answer to that of the question master and you will win another token. This has to be the most fun as you have to think about how the person reading the question might answer and not the actual answers. Play continues until the tokens run out and the winner is the one with the most tokens.

The Game from Wikipedia is a great family and grown up game, and has caused lots of interesting discussions in our family about what we know and some things we had no idea about. The Game is fast paced as you have the timer to keep you going although for the boy we tended to be flexible on time as he gets stressed under pressure. Once you have mastered the format then it is more about the varied facts and interesting information you can learn in the Wikipedia game.

The Game about Wikipedia is available from your local toy store or online retailers like Argos, and Amazon.

Family Games at Christmas

Family games nights are set to increase this year according to recent research from Drumond Park and I couldn’t agree more with their findings.

A predicted 51% increase over last year in the purchase of  table-top games (which include traditional board games and action games) among parents of 4-9 year-olds may well be on the way.

Drumond Park surveyed over 1,000 families over the Summer and autumn and found more families are planning to buy games this year, an increase on last year. We love family games nights, and where I thought as the boy got older he would grow out of wanting to sit down and play with us I have found the opposite. OK, so there is still the pull of wanting to play computer games, but some nights he will ask to play a board or card game.

pickin-chickens-fox-appears-lr

Traditional board games are a way of bringing different generations together and help communication between generations. The parents of children aged 4 -9 were surveyed and the findings showed a change of thinking. Parents are wanting to spend more quality time with their kids and surprisingly kids are loving playing games too.

But the main reason parents want more table-top games than ever before is because their children just love them. In previous independent research, undertaken by Drumond Park in May of this year, 86% of 4-9-year-old boys and girls said playing table-top games is one of their favourite forms of play. For girls only, the figure is 87%, while almost 90% of 6-year-olds of both sexes rate table-top games over other forms of play.

For us as a family its time to chat about our day or week, to learn new games and strategy’s and generally just have fun. There is nothing better than ganging up on Dad Dragon with a game of Dig In, or just silly fun with games like Crazy Claw, or Pickin Chickens.

Dig in from Drumond Park – Review

Dig In is a great new game from Drumond park and one I have been excited to try out since I first saw it at Toy Fair in January. Available now for 2-4 players, aged 8+, RRP £19.99. (No batteries needed)

Dig In captured my attention as it is a simple fun family game that takes no time to learn. The box contains 128 play pieces, Dig In bowl, timer and 12 double-sided cards. After setting up the bowl with playing pieces in the centre of the table, players take a card. The first player has one turn of the timer (15 seconds) to find as many of the playing pieces pictured on the card. The first round the players each get a go on their own. Subsequent rounds it is a free for all and the only additional rule is they may only search one-handed.

dig-in-from-drumond-park

The winner of the round is the first to correctly find all the pieces on their card, and the winner of three cards is the Dig In winner! The cards have two sides coloured and grey. The grey meaning that you can collect that piece in any colour, we actually found this more tricky so experimented playing both ways in a game to mix it up.

Dig in, in its simplicity makes it a great game for Christmas, as everyone can join in quickly. Don’t be fooled into thinking that the lack of rules makes Dig In easier for the parents to win. There was plenty of hand slapping and some devious tactics from the one-handed Dragon Dad. The pieces themselves when on their own are easily identifiable, but when in the Dig In mix telling and ice cream from a rocket is a little more tricky. Dig in is a fast and furious game that we have loved playing as a family and cant wait to share with our visitors over the festive season.

British History Timeline – Review

British History is the latest edition to the Timeline series of games. You can buy British History now online or from your local toy store for RRP £13.99 suited ages 8+ for 2-8 players.

The British History edition of Timeline is a great addition to the series and can be played on its own or mixed into the other timeline games. The lovely handy storage tin contains 110 historical cards, and instructions. British History Timeline is so easy to learn that we now just have a quick game when we don’t have time for a whole board game set up. We decided that Bingo Granny might be good at British History so tested it out on her most recent visit.

british-history-timeline

You don’t need lots of room to set up the game so British Timeline is the perfect family on the move game. Players start with 4 random cards, and one card is turned face up with the date. Players then take turns placing their cards where they think they belong in the timeline. The winner is the one who can place all of their cards.

british-history

We love this game as it causes so many questions. It is a great multi generation game as we found age doesn’t always help. It can be played tactically by placing the cards you have no idea where they go early. Saving the ones you know the dates can make you the winner. Dad Dragon has found the game he can beat us at as he has a good memory for dates. The boy does well too as once played he too remembers the dated cards.

british-history-timeline-game

We love the addition of the Brexit card, a great one to start with! The boy also loves to just sit and build his own timelines like a game of solitaire. He is learning about British history and keeping himself amused at the same time. British History Timeline is a great game as a Christmas stocking filler, and is great as a whole family game.

British Timeline is available now from Amazon (affiliate link below) and all good retailers.

Cortex Challenge Game – Review

Cortex Challenge is a handy sized brain game from Esdevium, for  2-6 players, aged 8+, RRP £12.99. Available now from your local toy store or online from Amazon (my affiliate link is below)

There are three editions in the Cortex family each have slightly different style challenges. All are easy to understand, but mastering them is the challenge. The Cortex Challenge box includes 90 cards, 10 raised touch cards, 6 brain jigsaws, and instructions.

cortex-challenge

Game play is simple each player has 30 seconds to examine the 10 raised touch cards before they are shuffled and placed face down on the table. The remaining Cortex test cards are shuffled and placed on the table. Players starting with the youngest, take it in turns to turn a card, and test their brainpower. There are eight different style of challenges like memory, maze, duplicates and colours. We found one or two slow-paced game was enough to get used to the types of challenges before playing at full speed.

When the card has been turned it is the first player to cover the card with their hand, and without looking shout out the answer. Answer correctly and you keep that challenge card. Answer incorrectly and no card, plus not being able to answer in the following round. You can win up to 4 test cards, and once two challenges have been matched you can choose a brain piece. The Cortex Challenge winner is the first to complete their 4 piece brain puzzle.

This all may sound simple, and it is to start with. We soon found that as you get faster at answering mistakes were often made. It may seem simple to spot the word written in the correct colour, but your brain may take a while to pick out the answer. We loved the addition of the touch challenge. Remember at the beginning you felt the raised cards? When this card appears the last person who won a test card has the chance to win the touch card. The other players choose which card the player will feel, and you have 10 seconds to decide which one it is. I found this easy and difficult in equal measure. You may think you are good at remembering the feels, but with only 10 seconds this is a great test.

cortex-brain-game

We took Cortex on our summer holiday as it was neat and easy to pack. Because it doesn’t take much room to play Cortex Challenge it is perfect to play while waiting for our evening entertainment, or even after lunch. The more you get used to the types of Cortex Challenge’s the easier it is to play. There was still enough cards for us not to become to over-familiar with the game. And even better we could play easily with 3 players with games lasting around 20 minutes.

If you would like the chance to try out Cortex Challenge, or the Geo or kids edition then click on my Amazon affiliate links below, or visit your local stockist. ( I also spotted Cortex for sale in my local WH Smiths)

Fruit Salad – Review

Fruit Salad is a great portable family game from Esdevium for 2-6 players aged 6+ and is available in toy shops or online RRP £13.99.

Dobble has been a family favourite game and Fruit Salad will be joining it as it is such a great tinned game. Fruit salad has joined us on a couple of family outings and with its tinned box is easy to pop in a ruck-sack as a time filler on a day out.

fruit-salad

The Fruit Salad game tin contains 60 fruity cards, two dice and instructions to get you started. Fruit salad is easy to learn and once you are confident with the rules game play is fast and fun. Starting a fruit salad game begins with shuffling the cards and dealing equally. The two dice are thrown and the top faces noted. Then each player turns a card from their pile in turn. The fruit die gives you the fruit and the red dice the number you are looking for. Simply then count this number of fruit as you turn the cards.

Look out for the any fruit picture, and the minion picture on the cards. The minion means a roll of the red dice. This will quickly change the game, and makes it a bit more difficult. Be the first to place your hand over the fruit salad pile of cards and call correctly to win. The first to 4 victories is the game winner.

fruit-salad-game

The boy has loved this game as it involves being quick and counting. It is great for learning to count quickly and remember what you have seen. You can adapt the game for the ages of children playing. If competitive adults are involved then make it tricky for them by turning and calling with the same hand. If smaller children are learning then they can turn the card towards themselves so they get first look.

Fruit Salad is a great travel game. Not just because of the  great tin to store it in. It also only takes a matter of minutes to complete a full game. This means it has been a perfect game for us while waiting for meals out.

If you would like the chance to win Fruit Salad to play with your family then enter with my Gleam app below, or click on my affiliate link below for the latest price.

Crazy Claw – Review

Crazy Claw is just one of the new games from Drumond Park . This action packed game is suitable for 2-4 players aged 5+, RRP £22.99.

I was lucky enough to play the NEW Crazy Claw game at the London Toy fair earlier in the year. I can see it being popular this year with fun-loving families. Based on the arcade claw machines, you capture a ball from the crazy claw machine. Open the ball to reveal a token and match with your collection card. Match three cards to become crowned the winner.

crazyclaw-3d-lr-1

Crazy Claw may sound simple, but with your opponents using the side paddles to make the balls bounce around the Crazy Claw cube. Grabbing a ball becomes more of a challenge. Crazy Claw is set to be a fun family game and will be available in time time for Christmas. I wont be surprised if it makes a few top toy lists as well with its cute retro game play.
