Camel Up – Review

Camel Up is another award-winning game distributed by Esdevium, suitable for ages 8+, 2-8 players and RRP £24.99. This is a fun betting game for all the family, and has already become a family favourite.

The box contains a board, rules, 5 coloured camel counters and matching dice. 40 race betting cards, 8 desert tiles, 15 leg betting cards, 5 pyramid tiles and a selection of coins and notes. There is a small amount of construction needed for the pyramid which is used to shake the race dice, but this is easy and takes no time to make. I love that with Camel up they have thought about how you store the pieces and the box comes with zip lock bags for the smaller pieces for after you have opened packets of cards.

camel up

Camel up is a game that is fun to set up, the board has a town for the betting part of the game and a track for racing the camels. The set up for the game takes a while to work out, and I have taken to reading through game instructions a day before embarking on a new game. This way it saves the frustration of the boy wanting to play straight away. We were very soon getting stuck into learning how to play camel up, and working out our strategy’s. Once you have laid out all the pyramid, and betting tiles. Given each player a starting kitty of 3 Egyptian pounds, 5 betting cards and a desert tile it is time to set up the camels.

camel up pyramid

We love the pyramid dice shaker and you store the coloured dice inside for the game, but first shake all the dice to find out where the camels are going to start. The fun part of the game is stacking the camels. If a camel lands on another he goes at the top, and becomes a unit meaning that he moves with the camel below. The object of the game is to bet on the winning camel and make as much money as you can. This sounds simple but there is plenty to think of, and once we had tried the game a few times found that you had to take a few risks in how you bet.

On each turn of Camel up you have four options, first to take a betting tile on which coloured camel you think might win the leg. Betting on the overall winner. You could place your desert tile on the board or move it to help boost a camel to the winning line or stop him in his tracks. Or your other option is to take a pyramid tile and shake and release a dice from the pyramid. The rules are far more comprehensive and once you have played the game through are easier to understand. Camel up is basically played in sections legs with each player taking turns until the last dice is released. The bets are all paid out, and moneys won and lost. We found each game was made up of about 4 or five legs and took about half an hour to play.

camel up game

The game ends when the first camel crosses the finish line. The game stops monies are paid and the overall winners and looser are paid out. This we found was where it was worth taking an early risk on which coloured camel might make it to the finish line. Camel Up is a great family game and one that we have played with granny too. We found the boy doesn’t like to take risks and Dad dragon does! This means that out of the last 4 games we played Dad has lost quite badly including going into minus coins! The boy likes Camel up, working out how staking the camels and moving them and which ones still have to move in relation to the coloured dice. At first glance Camel up may seem a little straightforward or even dull, but we can see why it already has won awards, and has become an evening favourite.

Star Wars Bedding from Character World – Review

We are all fans of Star Wars in the soup dragon house, and quite honestly I don’t know many people who aren’t, maybe those that don’t have boys in the family? So most of you will know that May 4th seems to have been renamed as Star Wars Day.

The boy was excited to be updating his duvet cover for a new Star Wars The Force Awakens set from Character Bedding in time to celebrate “May The Fourth”. Character world produce a great fun range of bedding and accessories licenced by Star Wars and Disney and sent us a single duvet cover and a reversible cushion to brighten the boys room.

star wars

The Star Wars duvet cover is made from a polyester cotton mix and is reversible with movie scenes on one side and a red and white repeating graphic on the other. It is a nice heavy fabric which I know will wash and iron well. There is a great range of bedroom accessories available from Argos, ToysRus or online retailers like Amazon. You can even get a double sized cover for those grown up fans who have a bigger bed!

star wars the force awakens

The boy thinks his new duvet cover is pretty cool, and I have to agree its a nice inexpensive way to update his room. The boy loves cushions so the new Star Wars cushion has already taken pride of place next to his force awakens PJ’s. If you would like the chance to win a character bedroom set of Star Wars The Force Awakens (episode VII) just like ours then complete the gleam app below.

Carcassonne – Review

Carcassonne is an award-winning strategy game available on line or visit the Esdevium website for local stockists, for 2-5 players, aged 7+, RRP £27.99.

I was excited to see what the soup dragon family would think of the game of Carcassonne as I had seen it at the London toy fair in January and thought that we would enjoy this style of strategy game. The box contains a score board, 45 coloured playing pieces, 84 land tiles and a rules booklet. At first glance I thought Carcassonne might be a bit tricky to learn, but despite quite a large amount of rules, there are additional ones that are not needed for your first game.

carcassonne

The game play of Carcassonne is simple, each player takes turns choosing and placing a land tile. A little like a jigsaw each piece can have a road, city or monastery. You choose a colour of playing piece (called meeples) one stays on the score board the others are used to take ownership of city’s or roads as they are built. Players take turns to do three things. First you draw and place a land tile, next place a meeples (if you want) and next you score any completed feature.

carcassonne board game

Learning what will score the most, and where to place your meeples is the most difficult part of the game to learn. But we have found once learnt we were happy to add in the additional scoring rules like adding rivers, and even farmers which all score differently and change the layout of the game. You will need a nice clear space as your city’s grow, as even though there is no board, the land tiles need space so you can add to them without having to move the whole game.

We have played Carcassonne as a 2,3 and 4 player game, although Bingo Granny wasn’t exactly sure what she was doing! The boy has enjoyed building up the cities and scoring. Dad Dragon enjoyed the strategy aspect, and I liked finding new ways to try and win. Carcassonne is a nice easy and relatively quick game to play, the box suggests an average game takes 35 minutes, we found a more competitive game took a little longer at 45 minutes. Once you think you have mastered Carcassonne there are expansion packs to change the basic game, and this is a great way to expand the game, so you don’t get bored with it.

carcassonne game

Carcassonne has already found a place in our regular Sunday game/puzzle mornings, and will be one that we can enjoy playing for some time as it makes you think hard about your moves as you play. If you would like the chance to play Carcassonne with your family then why not enter my gleam giveaway below.

Eco Beads Giveaway from Interplay and My Style Crafts

Eco Beads are one of the many My Style Craft sets available from Interplay and I have a set to give to one lucky reader. I saw lots of fantastic new craft sets while I was at Toy Fair this year, and am looking forward to trying some of them out for myself. The boy enjoys bracelet crafts and I can see that even he would like the idea of using old paper and recycling them into interesting and different beads.

Disney Pictopia – Review

Disney Pictopia is a fun family game with many awards to its name and we were excited to find out if this game would be as fun as it looked from the box. Available now RRP £29.99 for ages 7+ and 2-6 players.

disney pictopia

Disney Pictopia is a picture based question game, but unlike other board games where you play as an individual the great part of this game is that you answer a lot of the questions as groups. This makes Disney Pictopia a great all ages family game. The box contains: 6 mickey counters, 6 sets of wager coins, a dice, Mickey answer dial, board, rules and 1,000 picture question cards.

We found the rules and game play very easy to learn, and the game played well in our little family of 3, as well with more people as we tested this game on granny too! Each player starts choosing a coloured mickey playing token, 5 wager coins, and the answer dial. cards are shuffled and placed picture face up and you are ready to go. The person with the next Birthday starts as the question master. they throw the dice and move their token this number down the board. The square they land on will show which question from the card will be asked. If the question master lands on gold silver or bronze, then the other players will answer as a team. the solo pick spot and spotlight squares you will need your mickey answer dial.

disney pictopia board

Before the question is read out you place a wager coin on the board depending on how confident you are that you will get the answer. These are placed face down on the bottom of the board, and then the question is read out. Depending on the square as to how many answers you have to give, and we loved the fun spotlight rounds. These are questions where you have to match the question masters answer using your mickey answer dial. If answered correctly each player moves the same number of spaces as they wagered. These tokens are then put to one side and play continues with the player on the left becoming the next question master.

On first glance I thought Disney Pictopia might be a little tricky for the boy as he has seen lots of Disney films but maybe not as many as I have in my lifetime. I needn’t have worried as I had the tables turned on me when it came to the newer films and Disney characters. The questions cover lots of the Disney TV shows as well as films so there are some I had never seen before. The questions are sometimes challenging, but we found others which looked hard could be worked out with a little thought They are not always the question you think will be with the picture either so this will keep you on your toes!

disney pictopia game

We have loved Disney Pictopia ( I knew we would) and I think for any Disney loving family this is a must have board game. Games are fun, inclusive of all ages, and get you talking about your favourite characters, or even why you chose Merida to guide you through the forest. I would say our only disappointment is that we cant understand how Dad has managed to win at every game we have played? I think maybe he is a secretly watched more Disney films than we have? The quality of Disney Pictopia means that it will last as a family game, and there are additional rounds and content via the free app.

If Disney is not your family thing, then keep your eyes peeled as the Star Wars version is due out later in the year. I was lucky to have a go of the prototype at the London Toy Fair, and it looks like a winner especially as you can play as Yoda, but beware the questions looked super tricky.

Colt Express – Review

Colt Express is a Bandit Train game for 2-6 players aged 10+ RRP £27.99. This game is an award-winning board/card game with a bit of a difference. We have tried other games from Esdevium and were looking forward to something new.

The box contains, 6 playing pieces and 6 sets of action cards. Marshal, Locomotive, 6 cartridges, 13 bullet cards, 17 story cards, 18 purses, 6 jewels, 2 strong boxes. Also assembly instructions game rules and 6 player profiles.

colt express

Colt Express sounded just the sort of game that my family would enjoy so I was interested to see what they would think to this different style of board game. The box looks fairly traditional but once you open it you will find that unlike other games it has no board. Instead you have to build the Colt Express train which will act as the playing platform for your pieces. There are 6 carriages, the Locomotive, as well as money, jems and even a few scene setting cacti. When you first set up this game it is worth noting that it will take some time and care freeing the pieces, to build the train cars. We found that if you tried to rush this process there was some damage to the playing pieces. The card is of very good quality, but it was almost impossible to avoid a few tears in the pieces. Assembly instructions are included and this took about half and hour to complete.

colt express board game - Copy

Once you have built the Colt Express Train it is worth having a good read through of the game rules. We decided to have a play through to get a feel for how the game worked and did find that the rules are quite complex. Once you have played a few times the rules become clearer and we found after two games we had worked out where we were going wrong. The basic idea of the game is to move your bandit playing piece around the carriages of the train using action cards, collecting as much money as you can. There is extra bounty to be earn’t for being sharpest shooter, and robbing the Marshal.

colt express game

You start the game buy choosing your bandit, each has a special power that comes into play when you get into the second part the “stealin’ phase” of the game. You set out the locomotive with the marshal and one of the strong boxes. You then need to add a carriage for each player. Each player has a set of 10 action cards, six bullet cards and a purse of $250 to start. Shuffle the 7 round cards and choose 4 to start your story as well as one end story card. Set up the train with the number of loot tokens indicated on each of the carriage floors. Choose a starting player and this person puts their bandit in the last carriage. Even numbered players go in the next carriage along, and odd numbers in the back. Now you are all set to start the first phase, the Schemin’.

colt express bandit game - Copy

Colt Express game play has two phases, Schemin’ and Stealin’ In phase one  you take it turn to lay action cards following the descriptions on the round cards. This is quite tricky to work out the first few times you play. There are additional rules, and this is the part where you have to concentrate on where you opponents end up!  Once all the cards are placed it is time for player one to read through the story in the “Stealin” phase. This is the fun part, as if you have “Schemed” correctly then you will be collecting the loot. Get it wrong and there is plenty of shooting into thin air! There are added events on some of the story cards meaning you need to think about where your bandit ends up at the end of a story too. At the end of the 5 parts to the story the Bandit with the most Loot, including shooting bonuses is declared the winner. In our case this was most often the boy, but I have managed to win back one game.

This is only a brief explanation of the game rules as there are additional play rules for experts, 2 player games and games with more players. Once we had mastered the basic play Colt Express has been a great way to spend a wet cold evening. It is a game that the boy feels he has no disadvantage with his age, with both an element of luck and mastery needed. The added special abilities of the bandits mean you tend to find a favorite player and stick to them. We had fun banning dad from his favorite player Ghost, or playing with players we hadn’t tried before. Colt Express is best played in a group of 3 or more and I can imagine is great fun in a bigger group, the age recommendation is about right as you need to have a good understanding of the complex rules and cause and effect each action card has on a player. There have been plenty of laughs as well with Colt Express as sometimes you have no option but to shoot or punch nothing, or even better being shot by the marshal and not ending up on the part of the train you thought. We even managed to persuade Granny to give it a try, and despite not really understanding fully what was happening, she said she could see it was good fun and something a bit different.

I have the chance of one of you to win this great family game, so if you think you would like to win Colt Express for your family then enter with my gleam app below.

OG on the Bog – Review

OG on the BOG, is a fun new game from Drumond Park, for 2-4 players aged 5+ RRP £22.99. Something for the family to enjoy this Christmas.

Don’t be put off by the title of this game, as it will be enjoyed by young and old, and even had the boy giggling. The box comes with OG in his Bog, there is a small amount assembly needed as you add the handle to the Bog door. There are 12 loo rolls a tree stump spinner card, and instructions. You will also need to install 3 AA batteries (not included).

og on the bog

The game play for OG on the BOG is straight forward and fast to learn. Start by assembling OG in his bog and turn the switch to on. You will hear OG snoring and sounds of the forest. load 6 of the loo rolls onto the pole by the bog door. Then starting with the youngest player take it in turns to spin the spinner. A red cross means end of your go. Hand holding loo roll means steal from another player. A green tick means its time to sneak up on OG!

og on the bog game

Sneak up to OG, and press the step outside, if he has heard you he will say something and your go is over. Hear grunts and even farts and its time to steal one of the loo rolls from outside the door. As carefully as you can remove one of the toilet rolls from the pole outside OG’s Bog. But beware if the toilet explodes you will lose two of your collected toilet rolls. The winner of OG on the Bog is the first person to collect 4 rolls ( with 2 or 3 players) or 3 rolls (with 4 players).

drumond park game

I thought the boy might be a little old for this game, but it turns out that farting, toilet humour and monsters is ageless for boys! We spent a fun hour playing with OG on the Bog, and Dad especially enjoyed winning, and making the bog explode. This is a fun game, that I can see the boy enjoying playing with his mates as it would certainly cause some giggles. For younger players OG on the Bog will be good for learning patience, and hand control as they sneak the loo rolls off the pole. The noises coming from Og on the Bog certainly made us all chuckle.

OG on the bog is already getting nominated as one of the top games for this Christmas, and I can see it being very popular with everyone after a big Christmas dinner. Available now in all toy stores, or via my Amazon affiliate link below.

Gee Whizz – Review

Gee Whizz is a great new magical box of tricks from Drumond Park. Aimed at children aged 5+, RRP £19.99 this set is a mix of magic tricks and illusions to make the mind boggle.

The box contains instructions for 15 tricks and illusions as well as all the props you will need and of course a special magic wand. The only extras you will need are imagination, and in the case of the boy a good hat!

gee whizz

The boy’s interest in magic has been reignited after we saw a really good close up magician at our campsite in France. He was super keen to try out Gee Whizz and see if there was anything different in this box of tricks. I think he was pleasantly surprised as we have found in the past that some magic sets can be a little flimsy, small or sometimes don’t have all the props included. This can be frustrating if you don’t happen to have a coin of handkerchief handy. Gee Whizz doesn’t have this problem as even with the tricks that needed different parts all the bits are in the box. Add in the super clear guide with detailed colour pictures and we were in for a great magic show.

gee whizz contents

The boy started off with the wand trick which I have to say is very different, and rather cute. Making the feather flowers appear from nowhere is easy and great fun, add in some dramatic moves and your audiences will be wowed. Next out of the Gee Whizz box was the rope trick. This was something the French magician had done, and the boy was soon adding flair to the trick which had me baffled for a while. By far the favourite trick was where’s Polly? With the boys newly named wand “Steve” he could make the parrot fly around the room and appear in a different cage. This is a great trick if you have a child who loves to tell a story like the boy does.

instructions

The Gee Whizz box also contains some clever illusions, a spinning top that changes colour and even cards for you to practice your shadow puppetry. The boy had a great time trying to invent new tricks with the cards, and even put on a mini magic show for us which included some card tricks he had taught himself from YouTube. I would say the only disappointing part of this set is the flimsy box, it would have been nice to have a sturdy box to keep the tricks in, or even a nice little magicians bag. We think this Gee Whizz set would be a perfect starter set for any child and even young ones will love adding their flair to put on their own magic shows.

You can buy Gee Whizz now from toy stockists, click my amazon link below or  visit the Drumond Park website for more information. I can see Gee Whizz being a very popular Christmas gift this year.

We have been given a Gee Whizz box to share with you. Simply complete the gleam app, and answer the question in a comments below.

Sshh! Don’t Wake Dad NEW Drumond Park game – Review

Shhh don’t wake dad is a brand new family game from Drumond park, and is available now in plenty of time for Christmas. Recommended for ages 5+, 2-4 players this game will be a great hit this Christmas for families all over the country.

The box contains a playing board, 4 coloured playing pieces, a spinner, rules, 16 cards and of course dad in his bed complete with alarm clock.

The game set up is easy with 2 AA batteries to insert into the bed unit (not included), and a couple of coloured stickers to add to the blanket of dads bed. The boy and I then set up the board which was simple to fold out, and with an equal amount of cards dealt to each player the youngest then starts. Dad is then twisted, and faceplanted onto the pillow. The boy thought this was very funny and with the addition of dads snoring when the switch is turned on means this game will be filled with giggles from start to finish.

The aim of the game is to get to the fridge and the large chocolate cake without waking dad, cards are dealt to each player and placed face up in front of them. Simply take turns to spin the spinner and move to the next coloured square on the board. Each square has a picture and number, if the square you land on has a picture, the same as one of your cards you are safe. If you don’t have that card, then the next step is to press dads alarm clock the same number of times as the number on your square. But remember “Shhh don’t wake dad!” As he will jump up out of bed, catch you sneaking past and send you back to the start. There are some extra rules which help game play, the first is, you get to take the matching game card for the square you are on if you end up waking dad. Secondly that only one player can be on a coloured square at any one time, so you can move further ahead to the next available empty coloured square.

If like me you are a naturally jumpy person then when dad jumps up there will much hilarity! As Dad makes me jump out of my skin, yes every time. Shhh don’t wake dad, is such a simple yet fun game that I think it would be difficulty to dislike this game. We certainly had great fun making dad do his faceplants and trying to get past him. It turns out that this game can take some time to play and isn’t over as quickly as you would first think. Of course the boy was the first winner, sneaking as far as the bed and not getting caught. We love the addition of having the squares over dads bed which means that other players can also get caught out. This game is perfectly suited for a family get together and as the rules are easy to learn and understand Shhh don’t wake dad will be fun for younger family members.

We have thoroughly enjoyed playing shhh don’t wake day, and think you will too. If you would like the chance to win shhh don’t wake day in time for your next family get together, then why not enter my giveaway below.
